Mary Bryant Shrader, creator of Mary's Nest Cooking School on YT returns!

It was my honor to have Mary back and this time, since it is Mother's Day 'month', I wanted her to share more stories of her mom.

Sadly, Mary lost her mother suddenly late last year, but she holds her memories in her heart and Mary's laughter, along with her husband Ted and son Ben, have been a source of comfort to her.

You'll find about her recent YT Million Milestone and so much more. Mary Bryant Shrader is the best-selling author of The Modern Pioneer Cookbook and a self-described "former New York City girl" who discovered the simple life with her husband in the Texas hill country.

Mary is a modern pioneer in the kitchen who has spent the last twenty years teaching friends and fans alike how to make nourishing recipes using traditional methods and whole, seasonal ingredients. Her mission is to teach her followers how to make nutrient-rich meals using traditional "pioneer" techniques like fermenting, canning, and drying.

I know you will enjoy it thoroughly and like her You Tube video's, she introduces this episode with her signature salutation, "Hello, Sweet Friends!"

Janet Aardema and Dan Gagnon, owners of Broadfork Farm, Certified Naturally Grown.

Janet Aardema and Dan Gagnon, owners of Broadfork Farm, Certified Naturally Grown.

Mix in 2 biologist, spice it up with 4 kids, be sure to add 2 working acres as needed and that sounds like a recipe for Broadfork Farm.

In this local edition of the podcast, I had the pleasure of having a wonderful converstation with owners Janet and Dan of Broadfork Farm. As they describe it, they're growing 'intensively' on just two acres while harvesting and packing for 200 Farm Shares each week plus a robust farmers’ market stand, an on-site Farm Stand, and two local grocery stores.

Dan Gagnon has been growing vegetables for 25 years, first as a gardener and for the past 13 years as a professional market grower. Dan’s approach to teaching and presenting is to provide nuts and bolts tangible information that growers can apply to make their farm’s operations more profitable, efficient, and resilient.

Dan resists a one-size-fits-all approach to farming and tries to assist growers to leverage their gifts and resources while minimizing their deficiencies and liabilities. Dan has farmed as co-owner of Broadfork Farm with his wife and business partner Janet Aardema since 2011 in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Dan and Janet have worked to build a resilient farm business that can handle both an unpredictable climate and an uncertain economy.

Janet describes farming success as 50% soil and 50% systems. Appropriately managing both allows one to meet their farming goals! As co-owner of Broadfork Farm with her husband and partner Dan Gagnon, Janet enjoys helping others learn practical farming information with her pragmatic approach grounded in realism.

Drawing on her experience growing vegetables for market customers since 2011, Janet teaches learners to adopt systems-based-thinking in order to apply knowledge to the unknown future events inherent in farming.

Learning from soil and plants while walking gently on the shared earth, living mindfully while surrounded by vegetables and flowers, and mothering four children in the context of both makes for a life simultaneously uber rich, challenging, and ceaselessly full of learning opportunities. With patient explanations and a strong attachment to honesty and integrity, Janet thrives on helping others learn about growing and selling vegetables and I was blessed to be able to share their story.

Jim Medeiros, owner of White Oak Meadows.

Jim Medeiros, owner of White Oak Meadows.

Part of the joy of bringing these podcasts to you is that I learn as much as you do, and this episode's guest really opened my eyes to one of the many ways that regenerative farm looks and what it can do to the land.

I know that you will enjoy this conversation and since White Oak Meadows has an 'open door policy' and you're in the Richmond area, I'm sure Jim and his wife Cyrille would love it if you stopped by.

Jim Medeiros and his wife Cyrille and live on their farm in western Dinwiddie County with their dogs which are mostly foster failures who just needed a couch to sleep on.

Jim had the desire and calling to farm ever since he was a kid.  Jim's grandparents were dairy and vegetable farmers and Jim’s very first job was working on a beef farm. He also worked for a vegetable farmer and another dairy farmer while he was growing up.

All of us have many ‘firsts’ in our lives, but I bet not many can say that they bought their first cow when they were in their teens and then expand that to having a small herd while still in school.

In 2012, Jim and Cyrille bought the ground on which White Oak Meadows was established and shortly discovered that the only thing they had growing was chick weed, which they referred to as “field fuzz”.

There were no earth worms, water didn’t percolate into the soil as it was rock hard, they didn’t see songbirds or wildlife, but time, patience and hard work has paid off as you’ll hear for yourself in this episode.

Brian Sanders, host of the top 5 nutrition podcast Peak Human and filmmaker behind the documentary Food Lies.

In my conversation with Brian, we talk about how the passing of both of his parents made him rethink everything that he thought he knew about food and how our systems are set up.

It was this quest if you will, that made him leave his tech job and start to do his own soul searching and researching that eventually lead him to start to work on the documentary Food Lies to try to explain some of the myths as well as educate himself and others along the way about big food and the food industry in general.

Brian Sanders is the filmmaker behind the Food Lies documentary, host of the top 5 nutrition podcast Peak Human, and an international speaker. He graduated from UCLA with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He’s the founder of Sapien Center, a popular health club in Austin. He also works to spread the awareness of regenerative agriculture and increase access to well-raised animal products through his nationwide meat & body care company Nose to Tail.
