    SATANIC PANIC: The Archetypal Slanderer and False Memory Syndrome

    What drives us to seek meaning in the shadows, and how do we discern the real from the imagined when fear and faith converge? The rise of the Satanic Panic in the 1980s drew upon ancient archetypal fears of evil embedded in the collective unconscious, merging with societal stressors like the emergence of fundamentalist Christianity in American politics and women’s increased participation in the workforce with the resultant rise of daycare use. The archetype of the Devil as slanderer can capture a community. Even as they are prompted to accuse others of devilish behavior, they themselves are controlled by the slandering spirit. Accusing is a defense that expiates one’s guilt and places it in another. Potentiated by a blend of projection and literalization, mass hysteria around claims of ritual abuse was spurred on by poorly trained therapists and law enforcement. Anecdotal reports of hypnotized adults and children were taken as factual and later discovered to be suggestions presented by authority figures. Later, researchers found that people in trance states would testify to experiences they had never experienced if it was merely suggested to them. False Memory Syndrome ruined the lives of many innocent workers. The resistance to reflection and self-confrontation makes us vulnerable to externalizing our shadow, and others usually pay the price.     Hey Supporters, This week, we're discussing a dream submitted by one of our supporters, a 32-year-old man who works as a communications manager: "The dream begins with scenes from an intense medieval battle. I see it in glimpses, but we contend against an enemy host with swords and spears. I slay many of the enemy, and there is a lot of carnage. It vaguely feels like a holy war. Then, I'm walking with two comrades, a man and a woman, through a modern town. The woman walks in front of a store and is suddenly blasted by a huge ball of fire. The man who is dressed like Thor from Norse mythology tries to peek around the corner to see where the fire came from and meets the same fiery fate. A store employee shot the fireballs. She's a woman about my age wearing a dark red dress. She's skeptical of me, and I fear her for obvious reasons, but eventually we become friends and even fall in love. One day, she hears me tell my whole story of the battle and hears all the details of the gruesome ordeal. She can't help but punish me and sends a fireball the size of an SUV after me. It slowly follows me as I run to protect myself in a naturally occurring fountain. The fountain is a big circle on the ground where water is softly flowing up from cracks in the dark stone. I try to dive into the water, but it's too shallow. I somehow manage to burrow underneath the stone, which successfully shelters me. The fireball lingers for a day or maybe longer, sitting just above the fountain. Under the water and stone, I am entrapped in a kind of cell with animals who can speak. They are like gorillas. They want to break free, but I fear the fire is still above us. When I'm sure the fire is gone, I show them how to open the gate. I'm surprised at this realization, but it seems accurate. I feel somewhat embarrassed when I exhibit strong emotions, but especially happy ones.     JUNG LOVE: This Week's Bonus Dream Interpretation

    Hey Supporters, This week, we're discussing a dream submitted by one of our supporters, a 68-year-old woman who works as psychotherapist: "I'm sitting on a dock at a beach on a lake. I have my legs hooked under the dock as I sit there. I look and see that an alligator is swimming toward me, coming fast. I frantically try to unhook my legs so that I can get them out of the water. I can't do it in time, and the alligator attacks me. I try to keep it away from me, wrestling it because it's coming up on the dock. It seems like a young, light green colored alligator about five feet long. Its skin is slippery and softer than I would have expected it to be. Finally, I get away and run off the dock to the beach and up to the house. I'm worried about the people I care about who are still in the water, but I have to get away from the alligator myself to help. I tell people at the house about it and there's a young woman with medium length brown hair who is calm and seems to know what to do. I think that maybe she is some kind of a camp counselor or teacher and can handle the situation. At one point I see her move to press an emergency button and I try to stop her but she says, 'Of course I will press it. It's an emergency.' I did not want to bring attention to it but she's right of course and I feel silly for underestimating the danger. The scene at the house changes to three men in uniforms who have caught the original alligator and now there are two more alligators for a total of three. One alligator looks like the first, light green and the same size, but a third one is white. The men begin to push the first alligator into a large, round, corrugated plastic tube that is hanging down. So the heavy animals have to climb up the tubes. As they lift them into the tubes, they keep their jaws shut around with a band around their snouts and one on the lower part of the animal to stop their tails from thrashing. I can hear the scrabbling noise of their claws as they climb up the tubes and wonder how they can keep their grip. I can't understand why they are getting rid of them this way. I move in and get a little closer to the third alligator, the white colored one. The man who holds him as he waits to put him up in the tube has the head and bound jaws near his chest, and he spits onto the alligator's snout and smears the spit around the outside of the alligator's mouth. I want to ask him why the alligator is white and why he spits on him." Thank you for supporting This Jungian Life!
