03: Stop Looking Over the Fence

03: Stop Looking Over the Fence

Today’s passage reflects something that I think we all experience in spades at times, and that’s envy. One insidious side of social media and the constant barrage of information we’re given these days is that we are exposed to a lot of things that tell us that others are doing better, achieving more, or in some quote-unquote ‘better’ situation or circumstance than yours.

Personally, realizing that I was only envious of a very specific component of someone's success or life was a watershed moment. When I feel a pang of envy, I understand that I'm not seeing the entire picture, and that wanting to be someone else purely to experience some very narrow component of their existence is an exercise in mental futility.

If you've ever let envy get the better of you in the past, or even currently, this passage is for you.

    I hope you enjoy.

02 - Your Anger is Killing You

02 - Your Anger is Killing You

“Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die." -- Carrie Fisher

Anger, in and of itself, is simply an emotion. A sign-post. But when anger and disappointment turns into resentment, it can reduce itself to a constricted, negative view of the world that begins to pervade our perspective. It colours our view, shrinks our world and dampens our possibilities. I am a recovering pessimist, and truth be told, it took years of squandered opportunities, failed relationships and a general discontentment to make me realize that I was the harbinger of my own problems. Not only was my negativity ruining whatever was in front of me, but that a defined focus on stopping the negativity and replacing it with optimism wherever I could would actually get me better results.

For anyone who feels upset at themselves, the world, the people around them, and needs to snap out of their perspective, this passage is for you.

    I hope you enjoy.

01: Just Start - a call to action

01: Just Start - a call to action

The feeling of unfulfilled potential and unmet goals can haunt us. They can cause distraction and anxiety to the point that we feel a low-grade level of discomfort in our lives. Research has shown that the Anterior Cingulate Cortex, a part of our brain involved in decision making, is highly active in patients with various anxiety disorders. It goes to show that not making a decision, and feeling the unfulfilled ambiguity of our lack of choice and action, can cause much anguish.

I hope this passage motivates you to begin something, to move from contemplation to action just as it motivated me to start Tough Love, and that it helps you eliminate the feeling of unfulfilled potential by taking your first step toward being the person you wish to be.

    I hope you enjoy.
