Mike Treen spoken about the history of migrant workers in New Zealand, the importance on having migrant workers in the country and issues they have faced during the COVID lockdown

We are joined today by John Crocker and Hannah to take about Health and Safety in New Zealand.

This is part 1 for Health and Safety. Today we talked about the importance of Health and Safety, what should a worker do in a difficult situation and WorkSafe. 

Debunked the idea that Heath and Safety was designed to stop business but really is there to help workers and company to create a safe environment. 

For every worker in New Zealand, who feels their work place is not safe, please contact your Health and Safety Rep, Union rep/organiser.

Guest, Shen, a trade unionist from the UK. Being an organiser from the UK and worked at Unite for the last 9 months, Shen had really sent the good and the bad of both sides of the world. 

Shen came from a union and a country that is struggling with many things New Zealand fast food workers takes for granted. 

Unlike NZ, in the UK Unions had little to no rights when it comes to accessing their members, they often get blocked from a company for even entering the sites. 

MacDonald Uk is also facing issues like Youth rate, Zero Hours, these are things we in New Zealand had stopped. 

Hours of work,  Zero hours and casual contract.   New Zealand has currently entered into a sate where tens of thousands of workers are losing their jobs over the next few weeks. It is truly a scary time for many workers across the country. The future of work may not look the same in the post COVID world. Workers need to be careful of any jobs they may accept in the new future.
