ADHD is as highly genetic as height and / or eye color.
ADHD usually is present from childhood through adulthood...a lifetime.
ADHD usually comes with commorbities (a.k.a. "friends") such as learning disabilities, anxiety, and depression to name a few. And if the "friends" are addressed / assessed / treated before the ADHD is, it actually sets up an incomplete and ineffective treatment and support plan for a person who is actually struggling at their core with ADHD.
Females are the most under- and mis-diagnosed for ADHD and repeatedly dismissed because of it, not to mention categorically assessed "inattentive" males.
ADHDers chase dopamine because we have a low amount in our systems, so we look to increase it in a variety of healthy and unhealthy ways. It's arguable multi-billion dollar industries exist because of this.
ADHD is "the best medical diagnosis" a person can get because it's treatable, can be managed with proper support, and can improve one's life tenfold (per Dr. Ned Hallowell, one of the world's leading ADHD experts).

So, why are we pretending that ADHD is only a childhood issue that effects hyperactive "disruptive" little boys? Why are we pretending that it's definitely NOT the assessment we need because we don't want "that"? Why are we pretending that ADHD doesn't rule the world?

Because...it certainly looks like, in fact, ADHD Rules The World.
World peace, here we come?
Let the healing begin.

5: Dr. Robert Root - Child / Adolescent & Adult Psychiatrist

In episode 5, Tera B. interviews child / adolescent and adult psychiatrist Dr. Robert Root.

They discuss how ADHD is a spectrum disorder, and not just the one ADHD stereotype the general population tends to connect it with.

Where therapy is helpful and where it’s not helpful.

What types of “assessments” there are, the importance of a medical professional taking a very thorough clinical history, and hopefully getting that done upfront at a young age to set a child up to thrive as they grow academically and socially.

Dr. Root also walks us through medication, that it shouldn’t be feared in general, but more importantly that an ADHD diagnosis doesn’t mean a child automatically HAS to go on medication.  He shares with us his own guiding principle for whether medication is necessary.

So, grab a pen and paper or favorite or download this episode so you can have a bountiful reference point for all of the great advice Dr. Root has for us today.

Please enjoy this episode with Dr. Robert Root.

4: Dr. Stephanie Rooney - Child & Family Psychologist

    Season 1: Episode 4
In episode 4, Tera B. interviews child and family psychologist Dr. Stephanie Rooney.
They discuss how ADHD children and teens are struggling in the pandemic and why.
How and why neurodiverse traits are exacerbated during this extraordinarily challenging time.
    ADHD and its comorbidities.
And what Dr. Stephanie considers “the perfect storm” of the pandemic.
They talk about the ADHD stigma, maybe why some parents are not ready to hear the diagnosis for their child, and the importance of planting seeds for hesitant parents.  While also touching on awareness of what social re-entry back into “life” might feel like.
Stephanie also gives us a glimpse of what’s been universally helpful for the neurodiverse throughout the pandemic, while also dropping some beautifully thoughtful gems on expectations and resilience; adding a wonderfully potent definition of resilience for worried parents.
A truly enlightening conversation about understanding that the collective ‘we’ are in a mental health crisis.  Let the healing begin here with Dr. Stephanie Rooney.

They discuss Laura’s coaching approach with kids, the incredible importance of remaining calm, positive rewards, and flipping all of our learned ideals about parenting upside down to actually allow children to be our teachers.  Additionally, we discuss actual teachers and partnering with them to support ADHD children as we could all benefit from Laura’s wise words.
Laura also discusses her eight-session program “Empowering The Active Dynamic Happy Dreamer” designed for children with ADHD and Executive Function challenges of which she co-created with Jo Futerman.  Laura’s warmth and passion infused every second of this episode, and left us inspired to advocate and spread awareness now more than ever.

They discuss Brett’s coaching approach and philosophies, the journey to his own ADHD assessment at the age of 42, the magnitude and liberation of adult assessments, post-assessment career pivots, and who would hold Brett’s hand and jump with him…without a parachute (spoiler alert: his wife - who sounds amazing!).

    1: Maiden Voyage

    1: Maiden Voyage

Episode 1 is our Maiden Voyage here at TheBeehiveADHD Podcast!I’m your host, Tera B.
At the wee tender age of 46, I was diagnosed with ADHD and General Anxiety Disorder.  The ONLY reason this even happened was because one of my children was getting assessed, and I discovered many of the questions on the life-history paperwork we had to fill out for the assessment also applied to…me?!?!!
This launch episode is a sneak-peak about that story, sprinkled with interesting and surprising basic ADHD facts that so many people simply do not know, especially when it comes to females.  My dream is that this series inspires, motivates, and liberates females (and their families) of all ages to get assessed, and if applicable, support systems in place to help them thrive.  Also, I hope the series inspires life changing conversations about the joys and challenges of neurodiversity while eradicating the very misleading ADHD stigmas out there, which often lead to female’s getting misdiagnosed or dismissed all together.
Please join me in this incredibly worthy quest!
