    Setting Career Goals

    Reflecting

    - [ ] It’s important to reflect on the past year, it’s the end of the year, holidays are upon us.

    - [ ] When I think back to the past year, I had a lot of successes and learning opportunities (not failures).

    - [ ] For example, I should be podcasting more.

    - [ ] I feel like I can do something great with this podcast, so carving out more time to dedicate to all of you will be a priority.

    - [ ] Decompress, enjoy your family and your faith. Keep your life in your mind, reflect and plan

    - [ ] Don’t party hard at company holiday events, use it as a time to network.

    - [ ] Get to know people who can help move things in your career or are keys to your success.

    - [ ] What were the things that made you stand out in the past year? How can you repeat successes? And avoid mistakes.

    - [ ] I always tell my teams that not everything needs to be a touchdown, marginal gains add up. Get that first down!

    - [ ] Think about the positive things that happened, enjoy those moments.

    Planning the new year

    - [ ] When the new year hits, what are you going to change?

    - [ ] How will you make steps towards your career goals?

    - [ ] How do you reset relationships or projects that went awry.

    - [ ] Everyone has new years resolutions for losing weight or some other personal goal. Why not set some plans for your career for the next year?

    - [ ] Don’t make them huge, think about what are the important key/critical items that you can actually accomplish within the year.

    - [ ] Figure out the steps to make that happen

    The importance of setting goals

    - [ ] Without goals you won’t have a way to measure your career

    - [ ] Goals keep you accountable to yourself, this avoids stagnation and disappointment

    - [ ] Don’t keep all of your eggs in the basket you’re in, you’re valuable. Find somewhere that values you

    - [ ] When I was working my way up in my career, I set goals for certain titles/levels to obtain by a certain age. I worked towards those goals.

    - [ ] Goal setting doesn’t have to be a super detailed plan that if steps go wrong, it becomes cumbersome or discouraging and you give up.

    - [ ] Think big picture, always. The details are important, but only so that the larger picture is accomplished.

    - [ ] You should find meaning in your path through life and your career.

    - [ ] You aren’t just building something at work, you’re building your character.

    - [ ] And that is more important because strong character builds more success. It becomes a flywheel effect.

    - [ ] There is no single moment that defines you, it’s a series of good (and sometimes bad) decisions. You’re building momentum.

Understanding a Hiring Manager’s Perspective / Getting Hired

    With no, or little, experience

When you have little experience, you have to convince a hiring manager to take a chance on you.

Make it an easy decision for the hiring manager. We need to know that you can make it without a lot of guidance.

How do you do that? What do you have to offer? In life, how have you taken leadership in other areas.

I have years of hiring experience and have turned down more people than I care to admit. It’s not because I’m evil or have extremely high expectations.

I look at it like this, if your marketability were a glass - the bottom of the glass should be filled to the minimal knowledge required to do the job, I’ll even accept less.

The rest of the glass is your passion, personality, willingness to take ownership, willingness to learn new things, and a willingness to challenge yourself and others to be better.

    With experience

When you have a lot of experience, it still comes down to a lot of your passion, personality, and willingness to grow.

However, a history of accomplishments or growth is required. I’m going to ask you to name something you’re very proud of in your career. I want to see your successes and know you’re independent.

I hire experienced people because they are professionals in their field and the expectation is that they are independent and can move things to completion.

I want you to tell me the story of you, you have experience so my screening won’t rely as heavily on whether I think you’re technically competent.

I want to know your future plans, do you think about your future. How does this position fit into your story.

Do research on the company, ask questions.

I only look at degrees when I believe it adds something that can’t be covered by other areas.

    Generative AI - Cybersecurity Risks

    Generative AI - Cybersecurity Risks

    Cybersecurity Implications with Generative AI
Consider supporting the show by visiting my patron page. Patreon.com/enjoylifepodcast
In this episode, I discuss the cybersecurity issues with generative AI. I built my career in cybersecurity and the threats continue to evolve, generative AI is no exception. Although my career has been in cybersecurity, I don’t intend to make this a cybersecurity podcast but I’ll address any issues making the mainstream news.
    What is Generative AI?
A quick summary for those listeners who are not in technology but have an interest in AI as it has become a newsworthy topic lately
Generative AI or artificial intelligence is a trained AI model that creates content, such as written responses (text) to questions, computer code, images, etc.
    - How generative AI is changing the world.
    - Why it’s such a big deal is that it puts machine learning into the hands of anyone who uses it.
    - Deepfakes are another example of generative AI.
    - Hackers are using AI to improve social engineering, phishing, and even using it to write malware!
    Security Risks
    - Data exposure. The protections put into place around the information entered into generative AI models are largely unknown.
    - There’s no good way to quantify the sensitivity of all the possible iterations of data given to AI models by citizens sensitive or private data or professionals working with business data.
    - Business data may also be proprietary
    - AI models are available for companies to leverage and innovate against. You don’t know whether they are securing your information or leveraging your data to train the AI model!
    - Phishing - Improving written email and better targeting phishing (spear phishing). Also better developed lookalike websites for credential theft.
    - Bias built into the models from the engineers training the AI
    - AI has some built in controls to avoid assisting in malicious activities, but these controls are fairly easy to bypass.
    - OpenAI (ChatGPT) being sued by authors for copyright infringement and investigated over GDPR violations
    Properly Using AI
    - Assume everything you submit is public
    - Don’t trust the results until you’ve properly vetted them for accuracy
    - Never submit private or sensitive information, if you’re building a document use fake information that you can then “find and replace”
    - Educate yourself, your employees/peers, and kids on the dangers of exposing sensitive information to AI and trusting the results that come back for bias or inaccuracies. Contact: mark@enjoylifepodcast.com
