    Hey Supporters, This week, we're discussing a dream submitted by one of our supporters, a 39-year-old woman who works as a psychologist: "I was climbing and jumping from high rocks. After that, my husband and I were able to stay over at a school-like building for the night. But some kids arrived and started running around and making noise, popping up in unexpected places. So, we called my in-laws and arranged to go to their house. My mother-in-law said over the phone that she would have dinner ready in 10 minutes. My sister-in-law was also at their house, and I began to worry I'd appear anxious during dinner with them. I was worried about trembling. I tried to get a beta blocker from my purse. I took half a tablet. Then, I was with my son in his room. I found his pet rabbit looking still and quiet and slightly trembling. I thought it was in a freeze response.     Hey Supporters, This week, we're discussing a dream submitted by one of our supporters, a 63-year-old woman who is "retired-ish" : "I'm interacting with a cute, small monkey. A woman tells me there is a monkey in Canada like this one, and that when they are together, they speak to each other in their own special language. It's actually a well-developed language with sentences and concepts. I say, 'I'm going to take this monkey to Canada to visit his friend.' I tell a woman I know that I just need to travel straight north to get to where the other monkey lives. I can see a map in my mind. When the monkeys are together, they talk to each other. It's kind of a clicking sound. I'm in an animal preserve where I see lions and bears. I'm fearful, but figure if they let humans and these large mammals be in the same space, they must have trained the animals not to attack humans.     SATANIC PANIC: The Archetypal Slanderer and False Memory Syndrome

    What drives us to seek meaning in the shadows, and how do we discern the real from the imagined when fear and faith converge? The rise of the Satanic Panic in the 1980s drew upon ancient archetypal fears of evil embedded in the collective unconscious, merging with societal stressors like the emergence of fundamentalist Christianity in American politics and women’s increased participation in the workforce with the resultant rise of daycare use. The archetype of the Devil as slanderer can capture a community. Even as they are prompted to accuse others of devilish behavior, they themselves are controlled by the slandering spirit. Accusing is a defense that expiates one’s guilt and places it in another. Potentiated by a blend of projection and literalization, mass hysteria around claims of ritual abuse was spurred on by poorly trained therapists and law enforcement. Anecdotal reports of hypnotized adults and children were taken as factual and later discovered to be suggestions presented by authority figures. Later, researchers found that people in trance states would testify to experiences they had never experienced if it was merely suggested to them. False Memory Syndrome ruined the lives of many innocent workers. The resistance to reflection and self-confrontation makes us vulnerable to externalizing our shadow, and others usually pay the price. Prepare to discover what shapes our collective fears and how they influence our perception of reality; how suggestive authority, societal narratives, and memory contribute to the formation of belief; which psychological mechanisms can lead individuals to deeply believe in events that have not occurred; whether we can truly trust recovered memories or if they are manufactured by cultural and therapeutic biases; why archetypal themes resurface throughout history in cycles of moral panic…and so much more.     Hey Supporters, This week, we're discussing a dream submitted by one of our supporters, a 32-year-old man who works as a communications manager: "The dream begins with scenes from an intense medieval battle. I see it in glimpses, but we contend against an enemy host with swords and spears. I slay many of the enemy, and there is a lot of carnage. It vaguely feels like a holy war. Then, I'm walking with two comrades, a man and a woman, through a modern town. The woman walks in front of a store and is suddenly blasted by a huge ball of fire. The man who is dressed like Thor from Norse mythology tries to peek around the corner to see where the fire came from and meets the same fiery fate. A store employee shot the fireballs. She's a woman about my age wearing a dark red dress. She's skeptical of me, and I fear her for obvious reasons, but eventually we become friends and even fall in love. One day, she hears me tell my whole story of the battle and hears all the details of the gruesome ordeal. She can't help but punish me and sends a fireball the size of an SUV after me. It slowly follows me as I run to protect myself in a naturally occurring fountain. The fountain is a big circle on the ground where water is softly flowing up from cracks in the dark stone. I try to dive into the water, but it's too shallow. I somehow manage to burrow underneath the stone, which successfully shelters me. The fireball lingers for a day or maybe longer, sitting just above the fountain. Under the water and stone, I am entrapped in a kind of cell with animals who can speak. They are like gorillas. They want to break free, but I fear the fire is still above us. When I'm sure the fire is gone, I show them how to open the gate. We emerge to the surface, where my love who tried to kill me, embraces me once more." Thanks for supporting This Jungian Life! ~Joseph
