Architect Behind CA’s Redistricting Maps
A gerrymandering fight has been dominating the political world. California is having a special election on Nov. 4 to decide whether to redraw congressional maps, in response to Texas Republicans trying to maintain a House majority in the upcoming 2026 midterm. We’ll sit down with the architect behind California’s mid-decade redistricting push. Paul Mitchell is a data consultant based in Sacramento and heads the demography firm Redistricting Partners.

AI Issues in College Classrooms
Artificial intelligence has become an increasingly common sight in classrooms, but has also raised questions and concerns about preserving academic honesty and integrity. As millions of students head back to school across the state, many will be asked to submit their work through programs like Turnitin, which aim to flag AI-generated content. But these programs are expensive and unreliable, while holding onto students’ submitted work. Tara Garcia Mathewson is a Spencer Fellow at Columbia University and a former CalMatters education reporter. She joins us to talk about the issues created by Turnitin, as well as the social implications of students turning increasingly to chatbots and AI systems for quick answers.
Coco Lamarr Brings The Winehouse Revival to Life
Coco Lamarr is an award-winning vocalist and burlesque entertainer. Originally from Sacramento, Lamarr has performed across the country and recently relocated to Los Angeles. For years, she’s heard a similar refrain from audiences at her shows, “You sound just like Amy Winehouse.” She’s embracing that vibe as the frontwoman of The Winehouse Revival, which is scheduled to perform this Friday, Aug. 29 at The Good Luck Lounge in Sacramento.
