Stanley Cup Aftermath + Jays One Game Win Streak

Stanley Cup Aftermath + Jays One Game Win Streak

The final hour of the FAN Morning Show begins with hosts Ben Ennis & Brent Gunning discussing the great viewership numbers that Stanley Cup Game 7 got on both sides of the border; wondering if it could carry over to interest in next year’s NHL 4 Nations Face-Off Tournament. With some news coming out yesterday regarding the coach of Canada, the duo takes some time to talk about the staff and players that could (or maybe more importantly) should represent and if the Cup final changed anything. They welcome on ESPN senior writer Greg Wyshynski to join the conversation of welcoming back best-on-best hockey competition and the excitement around it (09:30). The co-host of The Drop podcast also gives some great stories from covering the Stanley Cup Final especially around Game 7 and the Panthers celebration afterwards on the ice. They also re-visit the conversation of players due extensions this summer and wonder if the first one could determine the market the others get. Next B&B turn their attention back to baseball and specifically the Blue Jays. They enlist the help of MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson who witnessed Toronto’s first victory in eight games firsthand (27:18). Keegan provides the guys with the sense around the team and if, or where, to find optimism around this squad. The trio discuss why middling could be the worst position to be in and talk about what options the team has moving forward and towards the trade deadline. Can the Jays actually make it two in a row and win a series? We’ll find out tonight.

NHL Offseason + MLB Trade Season

NHL Offseason + MLB Trade Season

THE FAN Morning Show’s second hour is all about the moves needed to be made by Toronto teams. Hosts Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning start in the NHL where with the Stanley Cup awarded, it is officially the offseason. The duo look at some names around the league that are in line for extensions before the final year of their contracts. The main two are Leon Draisaitl and Mitch Marner. They wonder if one affects the other, especially the one that just won a Stanley Cup affecting one that’s in flux with his current squad. The two dive into what realistic Leafs options are regarding Marner and recap what reports have been out there in relation to them; they wonder if they should expect a resolution to the situation ahead of the draft this Friday and if not, is a move more or less likely to happen after July 1st. They also look at the super strong numbers Game 7 of the Cup Final did and if maybe playing so long into the calendar year helped that at all. Second half of the second hour returns to talking baseball as the hosts welcome on MLB Network’s Jon Morosi (26:16). The trio look at the upcoming trade deadline, the current standings and where the Blue Jays sit amidst it all; what should determine if Toronto sells, who from the Jays there would be the most interest in and which teams would be in the market for them. They also examine what return would be needed in order for TBJ to part with their two biggest assets and superstars. The hour ends with the daily Wake and Rake which focuses on the rubber match between the Blue Jays & Red Sox tonight.

The Future in Florida, Edmonton... and Toronto

The Future in Florida, Edmonton... and Toronto

The FAN Morning Show continues into its final hour and the focus remains on the NHL. Hosts Ben Ennis & Brent Gunning discuss if that was the best Stanley Cup Final they can remember in recent history. They are quickly joined by a guy who knows what its like to hoist Lord Stanley, Sportsnet’s own Nick Kypreos. Kyper recalls what it was like being on the ice with the hardest trophy to win in sports and the opportunity that slipped away from McDavid & the Oilers. They look at what the offseason looks like for both teams in terms of re-signing guys to try to make a run back to the Final next season. The talk morphs into what the Leafs are facing in trying to get there too. Next the morning duo check in with another Sportsnet colleague, Luke Fox, who is still in Sunrise, Florida after covering last night’s game and the series overall. He gives B&B some insight to what it was like inside the arena throughout the game and when the Panthers won as well as why covering this series was among his all-time favourites. Luke also tells TFMS hosts how he ended up getting a Conn Smythe vote, the process of submitting it and why he chose what he did. To cap off the hour, Ben & Brent go to Vegas to talk to Jason Bukala who is already there for the NHL Draft. He tells what it was like seeing his old team win the Cup, breaks down some of the decisions they (& the Oilers) are facing now in terms of their roster and also dives into the big trade we were notified of an hour before puck drop. Finally, Jason gives some expectations for Friday and if we could see some more moves before then.
