November 6 1993 - Pearl Jam went to No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with Vs, selling 950,378 copies in one week. 2014 - Taylor Swift's album 1989 debuted at No. 1 on America's Billboard albums chart, selling 1.287 million copies in its first week. Birthdays: Paul Gilbert of Mr. Big is 54 November 7 1975 - Elton John started a three-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with Rock Of The Westies, the singer's tenth studio album and seventh U.S. No. 1. 1987 - Tiffany became the youngest act to score a U.S. No. 1 since Michael Jackson ("Ben", in 1972) with "I Think We're Alone Now". The song written by Ritchie Cordell was initially a 1967 hit for Tommy James & the Shondells. Fun fact: Tiffany hated the idea of recording a version of her own for her album because she thought the song wasn't modern or hip enough. Birthdays: Joni Mitchell is 79. November 8 1961 - The Beach Boys release their first single, "Surfin'." 1994 - A&M Records releases Woodstock 1994, an album documenting the Woodstock '94 festival that took place in Saugerties, New York, three months earlier. The two-disc set includes live performances from 27 artists, including Joe Cocker ("Feelin' Alright"), The Cranberries ("Dreams"), Green Day ("When I Come Around") and Bob Dylan ("Highway 61 Revisited"). Birthdays: Leif Garrett is 61. November 9 1958 - Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog," exceeded sales of three million copies in the United States, becoming the first non-holiday single to sell that many. Until "Hound Dog," the only other singles to sell more than three million copies were Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Gene Autry's "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer." 1999 - The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announces the biggest-selling artists of the century in the United States: The Beatles have sold the most albums (106 million), Garth Brooks is the best-selling male solo act, and Barbra Streisand the best-selling female. Elton John's 1997 "Candle In The Wind" is the best-selling single of the century, and the best-selling album is the Eagles' Greatest Hits 1971-1975. Birthdays: Pepa of Salt-n-Pepa is 56. November 10 1979 - "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang becomes first rap song to hit the Billboard Hot 100, entering the chart at #84. 1990 - Vanilla Ice started a 16-week run at No. 1 on the US album chart with To The Extreme. Birthdays: Warren G is 52. November 11 1972 - The Allman Brothers Band bass player Berry Oakley was killed when his motorcycle hit a bus at the same intersection in Macon, Ga., where former band member Duane Allman had died a year earlier. Oakley was 24 years old. 1995 - The Smashing Pumpkins double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness went to No. 1 on the U.S. chart. Birthdays: Marshall Crenshaw is 69. November 12 1966 - The Monkees debut album started a 13-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart, selling over 3 million copies in three months. 2000 - Destiny's Child started an 11-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Independent Women Part 1." It was written by Freddie Mercury for the band's 1975 album A Night at the Opera and it was reportedly the most expensive single ever made at the time of its release, although the exact cost of production cannot be determined. 1992 - “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men is the No. 1 song on the Hot 100 for the 12th consecutive week, breaking the record. Birthdays: Vanilla Ice is 55 November 1 1970 - The Festfolk Quartet, which later becomes ABBA, played their first-ever concert at a Gothenburg, Sweden restaurant. 1994 - Nirvana's MTV Unplugged in New York album, taken from a performance a year earlier, is finally released. The album tops the charts in many countries, including the US, UK and Australia. Birthdays: Country singer Lyle Lovett is 65. November 2 1920 - KDKA in Pittsburgh becomes the first commercially licensed radio station in the United States. They are not the first station on the air, but the first to get the broadcast license. 2016 - Taylor Swift was the highest-paid woman in music, according to Forbes' annual list, having earned more than double her nearest competitor Adele. Birthdays: Nelly is 48 November 3 1990 - "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice became the first rap record to top the U.S. singles chart. 1998 - Britney Spears, 16, releases her first single, "...Baby One More Time." Three months later, it goes to #1 in America. Birthdays: Adam Ant is 68. November 4 1978 - Boston plays in the city of Boston for the first time, a sold-out show at the Boston Garden. 1988 - The U2 documentary Rattle And Hum opens worldwide. Birthdays: Sean Combs is 53. November 5 1966 - The Monkees were top of the Billboard singles chart with "Last Train To Clarksville," the group's first No. 1. 1995 - The band Garbage kicked off their first world concert tour cycle when they played at The 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. This Week In Music History October 16th - 22nd October 16 1951 - Eighteen-year-old Richard Penniman, who was already using the stage name Little Richard, made his first recordings for RCA Camden at the studios of Atlanta radio station WGST. 2006 - CBGB, the legendary New York punk club credited with discovering Patti Smith and Ramones, closed after a final gig by Smith herself. Birthdays: Wendy Wilson of Wilson Phillips is 51 October 17 1977 - Lynyrd Skynyrd released Street Survivors, the last album with frontman Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines, as both were killed three days later after the band's plane went down en route to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. 2005 - Fats Domino returned to his Ninth Ward home for the first time since Hurricane Katrina to find it utterly destroyed, with his piano and several of his gold records among the ruined items. Birthdays: Alan Jackson is 64. Eminem is 50. October 18 1968 - Led Zeppelin (briefly known as The New Yardbirds) played their first British engagement at the Marquee Theater. 1969 - The Temptations scored their second US No.1 single with 'Can't Get Next To You'. Birthdays: Anita O'Day was born on this day in 1919. She passed away in 2006 October 19 1985 - A-ha went to No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Take On Me," making them the first Norwegian group to achieve a No. 1 hit in America. 1995 - Nirvana were at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with the live compilation album, From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah. Birthdays: Pat Simmons, guitarist, singer with The Doobie Brothers is 74. October 20 1978 - The Police made their U.S. debut at CBGB in New York. 2003 - Amy Winehouse released her debut album Frank in the UK, (named after Frank Sinatra). Frank wasn't released in the US till 2007, after Back to Black had made her a global star. Birthdays: Tom Petty was born today in 1950. He passed away in 2017. Snoop Dogg is 51. October 21 1997 - Elton John's "Candle In The Wind '97" was declared by the Guinness Book Of Records as the biggest-selling single record of all time, with 31.8 million sales in less than 40 days. 2006 - Evanescence were at No.1 on the US album chart with their second album The Open Door. Birthdays: Doja Cat is 27. October 22 1966 - "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys made its debut in the U.S. singles chart in October. It would reach No. 1 by December. 2012 - Taylor Swift released her fourth album, Red. The first single is the No. 1 "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," a kiss-off to an ex she refuses to name. Birthdays: Zac Hanson, cutest Hanson brother, is 36.

Birthdays: PJ Harvey is 51 October 10th 1962 - The BBC somehow determined that "Monster Mash," by Bobby "Boris" Pickett was offensive and banned it from their airwaves. 2014 - Taylor Swift was named Billboard's Woman of the Year 2014, making her the first artist to receive the award twice. Birthdays: David Lee Roth is 68 October 11th 1990 - Drummer Dave Grohl played his first gig with Nirvana when they appeared at the North Shore Surf Club in Olympia. 1997 - Elton John went to No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Candle In The Wind 1997", a rewrite of his 1974 hit about Marilyn Monroe. Birthdays: Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates is 76 And Cardi B is 30 October 12th 1969 - A DJ on Detroit's WKNR radio station received a phone call telling him that if you play The Beatles 'Strawberry Fields Forever' backwards, you hear John Lennon say the words "I buried Paul." This started a worldwide rumour that Paul McCartney was dead. 1997 - With Backstreet Boys mania building worldwide, the group had to cancel a free, open-air concert at the Mostenses Plaza in Madrid when too many fans show up. October 13th 1974 - Renowned television host Ed Sullivan dies of esophageal cancer in New York City, at age 73. One of the biggest events in music history unfolded on his program, The Ed Sullivan Show, when a new group from Liverpool called The Beatles made their live U.S. debut. 1979 - Michael Jackson went to No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough," his second solo chart-topper. Birthdays: Sammy Hagar is 75 October 14th 1968 - The Jackson Five made their national TV debut on ABC's Hollywood Palace. 2020 - Post Malone won nine awards including top artist at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Birthdays: Natalie Maines of the The Chicks is 48 October 15th 1979 - ABBA played their first concert in North America when they appeared in Vancouver, B.C. 1994 - R.E.M. entered the Billboard 200 album chart at No. 1 with Monster. This Week In Music History October 2nd Through 8th October 2nd 1995 - Oasis released their much-anticipated second album, (What's The Story) Morning Glory 2002 - Twenty-five years after his death, Elvis Presley has a No. 1 album in 17 countries - including the United States - when Elv1s 30 #1 Hits makes its debut Birthdays: "American Pie" singer Don McLean is 74 October 3rd 1945 - Elvis Presley made his first ever-public appearance in a talent contest at the Mississippi Alabama Dairy Show singing "Old Shep". Elvis was 10 years old at the time and came in second. 1999 - Akio Morita Founder of Sony electronics, died at age 78. The 1979 Sony Walkman transformed both Sony and consumers across the world. Birthdays: Chubby Checker is 81 October 4th 1975 - Pink Floyd went to No. 1 on the U.K. album chart with Wish You Were Here. 1986 - CBS-TV newsman Dan Rather was caught off guard and roughed up in NYC by one man, as another yelled the enigmatic, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?" R.E.M. was inspired to later write a song about the incident, and it was their first single off of their 1994 album Monster. 2000 - The Chicks are the big winners at the CMA Awards, taking Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year (for Fly), Vocal Group of the Year and Video of the Year for "Goodbye Earl." Birthdays: Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire is 45 October 5th 1970- Led Zeppelin releases Led Zeppelin III 1979 - ABBA visited the White House while on tour for the first and only time in America. They met President Carter's daughter Amy, who was a big fan. Birthdays: Steve Miller is 79 October 6th 1956 - Elvis Presley releases "Love Me Tender," the title song to his first movie. It goes on to become his fifth #1 hit in America. 1979 - "Gotta Serve Somebody" gave Bob Dylan his 12th U.S. top 40 hit when it entered the chart for the first time. A year later, the band recorded Nevermind which exceeded all expectations and became a worldwide commercial success Birthdays: Will Smith is 52. September 26 1937 - Blues singer Bessie Smith died aged 43 after being involved in a car accident while traveling along Route 61 outside Memphis, Tennessee. With the nickname "the Empress of the Blues" 1987 - Michael Jackson started a six-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with Bad Birthdays: Olivia Newton-John was born on this day in 1948. She passed away in August of 2022 September 27 1982 - Prince released his fifth album, 1999. It was a breakthrough, selling well over 5 million copies worldwide, thanks to "Little Red Corvette" and the title track. 2014 - Taylor Swift issues 1989, her biggest-selling album. The first two singles are monster hits: "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space.” Birthdays: Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots was born today in 1967. Birthdays: Dee Dee Ramone, was born today in 1951 September 19th 1960 - Former chicken plucker Chubby Checker went to No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "The Twist" 1993 - Pearl Jam released their second studio album, Vs. The album set the record for the most copies of an album sold in its first week, a record it held for five years, despite the fact that the group declined to produce music videos for any of the album's singles Birthdays: (Mama) Cass Elliot of The Mamas and the Papas was born today in 1941 September 20th 1969 - During a meeting in London between John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Lennon announced he was leaving The Beatles. 1980 - Kate Bush scored her first U.K. No. 1 album with Never For Ever. Today In Music History September 11th-17th September 11th 1971 - The animated Jackson Five series premiered on ABC. 1976 - KC and the Sunshine Band went to No. 1 on the US singles chart with "(Shake Shake Shake), Shake Your Booty," the group's third No. 1 hit. 2001 - Walking to work as a comic-book illustrator in New York, Gerard Way witnessed the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. The day's events inspired him to start a band, which became My Chemical Romance. Birthday: Ludacris is 43 September 12th 1966 - The first episode of The Monkees TV show aired in the US. The series ran for a total of 58 episodes. 1987 - Michael Jackson began a two-month siege on top of the charts with Bad. Birthday: Country legend George Jones was born today in 1931 Barry White was born today in 1944 September 13th 1960 - The FCC bans "payola," the controversial practice of paying DJs for playing songs. 1991 - Geffen Records threw a party to launch Nirvana's single 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. The band ended up being thrown out of their own party after starting a food fight. 2009 - When Taylor Swift won for Best Female Video at the MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West came on stage and commandeered the microphone, explaining that Beyonce deserved the award for her "Single Ladies" video. When Beyonce won for Video of the Year later that night, she brought Taylor on stage to finish her speech. Birthday: Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and Metallica is 61. September 14th 1955 - Little Richard recorded the song "Tutti Frutti." The session had not been going well, but with only 15 minutes left in the session, Richard recorded the song and coined the phrase, "A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-lop-bam-boom." 1998 - MTV debuts Total Request Live hosted by Carson Daly. Birthday: Amy Winehouse was born in 1983. She passed in 2011 September 15th 1965 - The Ford Motor Company became the first automaker to offer an 8-track tape player as an option for its entire line of new vehicles. Tapes were initially only available in auto-parts stores, as home 8-track equipment was still a year away. Birthday: Franz Ferdinand drummer Paul Thomson is 46 September 16th 1970 - Led Zeppelin displaced The Beatles as the UK's most popular band. The Fab Four had been tops since 1963. The poll was conducted by Melody Maker magazine. 1979 - The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" was released. Although it was not the first single to feature rapping, it is generally considered to be the song that first popularized hip hop in the United States and around the world. Birthday: B.B. King was born today in 1925. He passed in 2015. September 17th 1931 - The first long-playing record, a 331⁄3 rpm recording, was demonstrated at the Savoy Plaza Hotel in New York by RCA Victor. Given the high price of compatible record players, which started around $95 (about $1140 in today's dollars), the LP wasn't revived until 1948. 1991- Hole release their debut album Pretty on the Inside Birthday: Hank Williams Sr. a legendary country-western singer was born on this day in 1923. He passed in 1953.
