I'm Dr. Margaret, a psychologist for 30 years, TEDx speaker, and the author of Perfectly Hidden Depression. I created The SelfWork Podcast in 2016 to explain mental health treatment, and to give you the chance to consider therapy without thinking it's weird or that you can't "fix" your own problems. My team is so honored that five years later, SelfWork has earned nearly 5 million downloads! Each episode features the popular listener question. You’ll also hear “You Get the Gist” segments - a five minute run-down of a current topic - as well as interviews with outstanding guests, authors, or experts, adding to the wide diversity of topics listeners so appreciate. Regularly rated as one of the top mental health/depression podcasts out there, I keep it short and casual - and I'd love to hear from you. Please join me.

In this episode, we’ll talk about loneliness, how simple acts of empathy can be vital to healing loneliness, and "the power of eight minutes" - a way of communicating about needing help, as suggested by thought leader Simon Sinek.

389 SelfWork: Are You or Someone You Love An HSP (Highly Sensitive Person)?

This week we're focusing on all of you who might see yourself or someone you love as being a HSP - or highly sensitive person. Given that 15 to 20% of the population is thought to “have” it – and I say that in quotes because it’s not something you have, it's something you are - it’s not an illness or a problem. It’s a personality trait. It characterizes you.

Ken Guidroz, author of Letters To My Son In Prison, is a husband, father of three sons, a grandfather, and an ex-pastor. All three sons had struggles with drugs. But his middle son? For years, Lucas was a heroin addict. And he accidentally killed a man while driving high. And he ran from the scene.

387 SelfWork: Six Misconceptions That Keep Couples Away from Therapy

387 SelfWork: Six Misconceptions That Keep Couples Away from Therapy

This week we’re going to be talking about couples therapy – and what misconceptions keep couples away from trying it. I can’t tell you how wonderful it is when a couple comes in WAY before there’s a crisis. But most don't. And these misconceptions are often the culprit; these six misconceptions keep couples out of therapy which also acts to help them avoid vulnerability.
What are some of these misconceptions? You're no longer in control. It takes too long and it's too expensive. Individual therapy is better than couples. And I'll also add some direct suggestions for those who might be talking about divorce.
    Hope you'll listen in!
The listener email is one I won’t read. But it made me want to share a couple of my thoughts about why I do this podcast, and what I hope you take from it. And what I hope you don’t.

Beneficial for Everyone to listen to.

Is worthy of every minute to listen to all episodes. The topics covered are various enough & at such a practical level for everyday living, Im sure there isn’t anyone who wouldn’t be able to get something from these. The professional perspective Dr Rutherford freely offers in a down to earth manner, out of the desire to help as many as she can just because she is able, is such a pure & refreshing thing to find in todays world. That in itself makes these episodes something to be appreciated.

I can’t stop listening them .

Hi Margaret, I accidentally found your podcasts two days ago and can’t stop listening them . I choose to listen what interest me but last two days probably listen around 15 podcasts which I learned great tips and advices also this give me opportunity to look at myself and do some self reflection about myself , my life and my family . I would probably write to you an email later on more details about myself but I really appreciate that you are putting your love , care , wisdom and experiences to people like me around the world which is wonderful.Could you also look about effectively communicating with teenagers, how to set boundaries and limits without being controlling/ angry at them ,how to set boundaries around electronic devices at home , how to rebuild intimacy with our partner, positive self talk techniques.. Sorry if it’s so much but I know that there are many parents struggle a lot above topics . Thanking you in advance and I will keep listening to your podcasts, they are so valuable. Love from New Zealand , B.
