Lowercase stoicism Vs. Uppercase Stoicism | Angela Duckworth

In today’s episode, Angela Duckworth challenges Ryan on the Stoic dictum that “you cannot change your situation, but you can change your response to the situation”. Together, they talk about self-control, grit, Stoicism throughout history, and lowercase stoicism versus uppercase Stoicism.

The Responsibility of Translating Marcus Aurelius | David Hernández de la Fuente

The Responsibility of Translating Marcus Aurelius | David Hernández de la Fuente

Today, Ryan is joined by David Hernández de la Fuente, the translator behind the Spanish edition of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Together, they talk about the responsibility of a translator, Seneca’s legacy as a Spanish Stoic, sharing Marcus’ work with new audiences, and the renaissance of Stoicism.

David is a writer and professor of Greek philology at the University of Madrid. He brings a refreshingly positive perspective on Stoicism to the academic world, as he shares in the article: Stoicism is back: This is the ‘slave doctrine’ to understand today’s bosses and employees.

Part of the routine

Listening to Ryan has become part of my daily routine. Always shedding a light of new ideas or revisiting knowledge that has slipped through the cracks.

His ability to articulate the stoic message in such an easy to digest manner has turned me into a relentless student of the stoics and now other philosophy’s as well.

Loving the new book as well!!

Self aggrandising

I read The Obstacle is the Way many years ago. A while later I found other thought leaders in Stoicism, that are able to relay thoughts in a more humble way and less arrogant and self-aggrandising then Ryan Holiday does.
Every time I try to give his productions a new chance I end up with the same thoughts. The content is partly interesting, but his commercial interests and self-promotion are clearly his purpose. The tone of voice, the style, the many commercials, the matter-of-factly sounding voice and attitude towards guests, the quick fire answers that seem to indicate that he doesn’t listen to his guests or questioners makes his works off putting for me.
There are many more subtle voices out there that are worth following. They are more in it to be part of the cosmopolis, not to self-promote.
In one episode I just listened to, Ryan mentioned all these humble CEOs no one will ever hear from as they are not in it to self promote and they are not in need of aggrandise themselves. I couldn’t help but think, that’s exactly what Ryan does. The value of the ancient thoughts he is recycling suffers from his need to be seen, his need to be heard, and need to be an influencer.
Check out some other less promoted and commercialised podcasts, authors and books. You might find more wisdom in them with less commercial distractions. More humble.

I used to love this but damn those ads!

I used to listen to the daily stoic pretty much daily. But some how as of late every single episodes is full of adds. There are up to 10 add breaks in a span of an hour long show. I mean I get that he has to make money but come on man, be a little bit more stoic!
