Blood Ties: The Murder of Scarlett Vickers

50-year-old Simon Vickers was the very definition of a devoted father. He lived in a modest suburban semi just outside of Darlington in County Durham with his long-time partner, Sarah Hall, and their 14-year-old daughter, Scarlett. Friends described him as hands-on, affectionate, and utterly devoted to his only child. So why then, on the evening of July 5th, while Sarah stood at the stove cooking spaghetti Bolognese for her family, did Simon drive a kitchen knife eleven centimetres into Scarlett’s chest? Why would a loving father turn into a killer in the blink of an eye? What darkness was simmering beneath the surface of this seemingly ordinary home? In this episode, we peel back the layers of this devastating family tragedy as we attempt to answer these questions. The Long Island Serial Killer

We originally covered this case way back in 2022 when Bethan went solo while Mark was on holiday. Fast forward three years, and there is so much more that has come out since. This week we both dive into the the case of the Long Island serial killer. When the remains of ten bodies were found in late 2010 and early 2011, detectives were faced with the haunting prospect that they were hunting a serial killer. Years of frustration followed as the investigation moved at a sluggish pace but then in 2023, a year after Bethan recorded her episode, there was a breakthrough when a seemingly respectable family man was charged with seven of the murders. A Murder Most Horrid

This week, in a special listener-written episode, we head back to the late 1990's, and to the medieval city of Chester, as we recount the final hours of father of two Alan Morris. On 30 December 1998, Alan had been out with his partner, Jane Rowe, and their friend, Nigel Jones, enjoying a few drinks at a local pub. During an altercation at a Chinese restaurant at approximately 11:30pm, Alan and Jayne argued briefly. That argument continued when they got home. As Jayne went upstairs for 30 seconds in the early hours of 31 December, Alan was brutally stabbed to death outside the house. Just who was responsible for his murder? And why would anyone want to execute a loving family man in cold blood? Join us as we attempt to unravel what really happened on that fateful night. The Accused: The Case of Alice Sebold & Anthony Broadwater

In this episode, we dive into the harrowing true story behind author Alice Sebold’s 1981 rape and the decades-later revelation of a devastating miscarriage of justice. Sebold, best known for her memoir Lucky and the novel The Lovely Bones, identified Anthony Broadwater as her attacker, leading to his conviction in 1982. However, Broadwater always maintained his innocence. This episode examines the long-term impact on both Sebold and Broadwater, raising critical questions about memory, systemic racism, and the justice system’s failures — and what it means to confront truth years after a crime. The excellent ITV drama Mark mentions in this episode, Undeniable, is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. The series can also be purchased on Apple TV. The Tragic Killing of Emily Jones

This week we head north, to Bolton, as we cover one of the most heart-breaking cases in recent history. Emily Jones was a bright, happy, much-loved child. She was innocently enjoying the sunshine with her father when her life was stolen in a moment so brutal, so sudden, and so senseless, that it shook the entire nation to its very core. But what followed only deepened the outrage. The woman responsible for the attack was a mentally ill foreign national with a long history of violent behaviour and disturbing psychiatric issues. She was known to adult care services, known to the police, known to the entire system. And yet, somehow, she was walking free that day. This wasn’t just a case of a life taken too soon. It was a case that raised urgent questions — about mental health oversight, immigration, and how we protect the most vulnerable among us. Questions that, for many, still haven’t been answered.
