The rise of rentvesting
We know entering the property market is getting harder all the time. But, could you afford to crack the market with an entry level investment without giving up the area that you want or need to live in? That’s what this episode’s guests have done. | First, we’ll speak with Tash Etschmann, who’s in her early 20s and bought an investment property in Perth that’s paid in full by her tenants. This enables her to travel around Australia. You can find Tash on instagram @tashinvests. | We’ll also hear from Brad McLennan. Brad and his partner Jacob bought a barn in regional Victoria (yes, an actual barn) and turned it into a beautiful holiday accommodation. They’ve since gone on to buy another property which is also available to guests. In the meantime, they work and live in Melbourne. Their properties are @thebarnheathcote and @thestonehousenagambie. | Find Nicole on Instagram: @nicolehaddow and @smashedavocadoproperty | We’re talking about property in this podcast and would like to acknowledge that this series is recorded on the traditional lands of the Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung Peoples. Could you live off-the-grid?
Going off-the-grid sounds like a simple, cheaper way to live. There’s no doubt it’s good for the environment, but how easy is it? In this episode we’ll hear from zero-waste crusader Joost Bakker (Instagram: @joostbakker), creator of the Future Food System (Insta: @futurefoodsystem), a house that generates its own energy and food using a closed loop system. | Plumber Aimee Stanton (@aimeekatestanton) also joins us to explain what’s involved in building tiny houses and what you’ll need to consider if you want to live in a small home off-grid. The First Year (the shit bit)
Nicole thought that once she finally secured her home things would get easier. Spoiler: they didn’t. Nicole knew she could cover the mortgage, but it was everything else (bills, body corporate fees, living expenses and property repairs) that made it tough to survive. So she took on a second role, writing the executive property column for the Australian Financial Review. That was on top of her day job at creative agency The Royals (Instagram: @theroyals). In this episode she chats to her former employer, Dave King (Instagram: @daveking) about taking on two jobs to find out what he thought about it. We’ll also hear from agent Kevin Pleysier from Hodges in Mentone, Melbourne, who talks about being realistic about your budget and what you can do to secure the right place. | Find Nicole on Instagram: @nicolehaddow and @smashedavocadoproperty | We’re talking about property in this podcast and would like to acknowledge that this series is recorded on the traditional lands of the Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung Peoples. Sealing the deal
When you’re looking for a property, it’s important to understand that the agent is working for the vendor (AKA the seller), that’s why it can be a good idea to have someone representing you, the buyer, so that you can ensure you’re paying the right price. In this episode we talk to Emily Wallace, a buyers’ advocate, who does exactly that. You can find Emily on Instagram @emily_wallace_ba or via her website: emilywallace.com.au | We’ll also talk to Aleks Nikolic, a young buyer from Sydney who bought an investment in Canberra and is really savvy when it comes to saving and managing money in general. You can follow her thoughts on all things money and investment over at @brokegirlwealth on Instagram. | Find Nicole on Instagram: @nicolehaddow and @smashedavocadoproperty | We’re talking about property in this podcast and would like to acknowledge that this series is recorded on the traditional lands of the Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung Peoples. Millennials v Boomers
The intergenerational housing debate rages on. Boomers still reckon they did it as tough as younger generations are now. Is that true? In this episode we hear from respected finance commentator Alan Kohler who has an interesting perspective on the housing market and whether people should be accessing the ‘bank of mum and dad’. We also hear from MP Tim Wilson who’s in favour of a ‘home first, super second’ approach for young people who want to enter the market.
