As we go through this epistle I hope to make it increasingly clear why I am referring to it as the blueprint and master plan for the Church militant in engaging in effective spiritual warfare.

    The Matthew Project, Part 15 - The Ascension and Glorification of Christ

    Having just dealt with the events leading to the Ascension of Christ, namely, (i) the last supper of Christ with His disciples prior to the Cross in which He established the ordinance of Holy Communion (the Lord’s Supper); (ii) His brutal treatment of being punched, scourged, mocked, facial disfigurement from having His beard ripped off His face proceeded by His crucifixion; and, (iii) subsequent to His death on the Cross, He was buried in the tomb of a rich man as Isaiah prophesied, then early on Sunday morning He was resurrected and rose bodily from the dead; we now deal with His post-resurrection appearances, His commissioning of His disciples, then His ascension and exaltation. Remarkably, the physical (bodily) resurrection of Christ is sometimes downplayed by some Christians as inconsequential when compared with Christ’s atoning death on the Cross. However, without diminishing magnitude of the cosmic ramifications of the Cross — having conquered sin, death, and evil — the results of Christ’s physical resurrection are worthy of our eternal gratitude to God and unending worshipful admiration of Christ. Consider Henry Theissen’s (1979: 247-48) summary of these results: 1. It attests to Christ’s deity. 2. It assures the divine acceptance of Christ’s work. 3. It made Christ our High Priest. 4. It provided for many additional blessings (the bestowal of repentance, forgiveness, regeneration, and the gift of the Holy Spirit).

    The Matthew Project,Part 14 - The Resurrection of Christ

    The Universe has hosted the three greatest cosmic miracles. The first, was the creation of the universe from absolute-nothing. This was when all matter, space, and time came into existence. Subsequent to this, all the materials needed for life to exist - the necessary gas mix, the three states of water, appropriately regulated temperature, an equatorial belt, soil with the necessary balance of microbial life, the necessary mass of the earth needed for life-sustaining gravity, and the seven layers of the earth's atmosphere: (i) Lowest atmosphere, (ii) Troposphere, (iii) Stratosphere, (iv) Mesosphere, (v) Thermosphere, (vi) Exosphere, (vii) Ionosphere. The second, was the Incarnation of the Son of God. The third, was the resurrection of the crucified Christ — which was when God defeated death, and defeated sin, evil, and the forces of darkness. In addition to this, the Incarnate Christ as the new Federal Head of the human race whose atoning death and resurrection has made the way for all members of the human race who accept receive Christ's of Substitutionary Atonement will also forgiveness of their sins, and resurrection from the dead.     The Matthew Project, Part 12 - Doing Holy Communion the Rite Way

    Each of the Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke, describe the Last Supper of Christ with His disciples in which He established the rite of Holy Communion which is also referred to as 'the Lord's Supper' (not to be confused with 'the Lord's Table' which is a status). Different Church traditions generally view this rite differently. For Roman Catholics it is a sacrament. For many Protestants it is an Ordinance. For some it is simply a Memorial. In this Podcast I discuss these different perspectives and offer some reflections from each of the four Gospel accounts. I then show how the early Christians regarded water baptism as a necessary step of discipleship in order to qualify to partake of Holy Communion.     The Matthew Project, Part 11 - The Transfiguration of Christ

    In this episode through the major themes of the Gospel of Matthew, we now arrive at what many scholars believe is the penultimate message of the Gospel of Matthew. In the transfiguration of Christ, which each synoptic Gospel places in its climax, just before the account of Christ going to the Cross, we are given a glimpse of the eternal glory of Christ as He takes Peter, James and John up Mount Hermon where Moses and Elijah appear to Him to encourage Him on His mission to the Cross. It is the clearest vision of the eternal glory of Christ that any of the New Testament's non-apocalyptic books give us.     The Matthew Project, Part 10 - The Greatness of John the Baptist

    Why is it that John Baptist receives so much attention in each of the Gospels? Could it be that his parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth were “advanced in years” and that it was Gabriel who declared to Zechariah that despite their age and barrenness that Elizabeth would conceive and bear a son to be named John? Could it be that the same Archangel told Mary that even though she was an unmarried virgin, she would miraculously conceive and bear a child who wold be the Saviour of the world — and she could confirm this word by visiting her aged relative Elizabeth and see for herself that she was six months pregnant by Zechariah? Could it be that when Mary did go and see and Elizabeth that the baby in her womb (John the Baptist) leaped for joy at the arrival of the Christ in the womb of Mary? Could it be that at least two Old Testament prophets, Isaiah and Malachi, prophesied about John the Baptist as Yahweh’s messenger who would be sent to prepare the way for the appearance of the Messiah? Or, could it be that Jesus the Christ publicly said of John the Baptist: ¶ “Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist.” (Matt. 11.11) And the answer is almost certainly, yes. And Jesus would have said this for two reasons: Firstly, John was authentically faithful to God even in the midst of his severe persecution. Secondly, John was faithful to God and the mission that God had given him even though it led to his martyrs death.     The Matthew Project, Part 9 - Spirit Empowered Loyalty to Christ

    The Gospel of Matthew was written by an eye-witness of Jesus the Christ - what He did, what He taught, the miracles He performed, the lives He transformed, and how people responded to Him. It was originally written to Jews who were eagerly looking forward to the arrival of their promised anointed Messiah. After being with Jesus for nearly three years in which the 12 disciples heard what Jesus preached and saw the miracles He performed, Christ commissioned His disciples to go out in pairs and do likewise. But He also warned them that ultimately the day would come when they would be persecuted for no other reason than they were His disciples. Christ's warnings about the inevitability of persecution teaches us several truths: (1) Persecution is spiritually motivated by evil forces. (2) It's not about you, it's about the devilish enemy's hatred of Christ and therefore His servants. (3) Persecution is not logical, fair, or rational. (4) What Christ expects of His disciples when they are being persecuted is courageous faithfulness - which Christ Himself modelled to them. Christ expects nothing less than total loyalty by those who claim to be His followers. Note this passage from Matthew 10 - Matt. 10.32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, Matt. 10.33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. Matt. 10.34 ¶ “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. Matt. 10.35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. Matt. 10.36 And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Matt. 10.37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Matt. 10.38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Matt. 10.39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Matt. 10.40 ¶ “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. Matt. 10.41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. Matt. 10.42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”
