October Surprise 2022: “A Call to Prayer.” Day 15

October 15, 2022 - Inspired by J.C. Ryle's treatise on Prayer. Way back in season 6 of our podcast, we took an extended look at “A Call to Prayer” by J. C. Ryle; those episodes turned out to be some of our most popular. For the next few days, we want to revisit a sampling of those episodes. If you find them encouraging, as I do, this review might spur you back to our 2022 and 2023 episodes to hear everything Pastor Ryle has to say about our call to prayer. Thank you for listening. Drop July 20, 2026 We truncated our introduction for the last half of our October episodes. Our shorter introduction ends at the 3:18 mark if you would like to skip to that mark. This way, you have less to wade through. But this I do say, that not praying is a clear proof that a man is not yet a true Christian. He cannot really feel his sins. He cannot love God. He cannot feel himself a debtor to Christ. He cannot long after holiness. He cannot desire heaven. He has yet to be born again. He has “yet to be made a new creature. He may boast confidently of election, grace, faith, hope, and knowledge, and deceive ignorant people. But you may rest assured it is all vain talk if he does not pray.” Subtly woven into this paragraph are the four main elements of prayer, Confession, Worship, Thanksgiving, and Intercession. These are undeniable marks of a heart saved by grace and one that is longing for knowledge of the Savior. Indeed it was David’s fellowship with the God of his salvation that made him confess: Psalm 27:13 I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD; Be strong, and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD. Even in the best of times, God’s people need strength, courage, and patience. How. Much more in our day? “What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more.”  Robert Murray M’Cheyne Assistant Editor: Seven Jefferson Gossard www.freerangepreacheronprayer.com freerangeprayer@gmail.com Facebook - Free Range Preacher Ministries Instagram: freerangeministries All our Scripture quotes are drawn from the NASB 1977 edition. October Surprise 2022: In My Defense. Day 12 Devotional 91

October 12, 2022 - Inspired by J.C. Drops July 16th We truncated our introduction for the last half of our October episodes. Our shorter introduction ends at the 3:18 mark if you would like to skip to that mark. This way, you have less to wade through. In my zeal for the moving call for our intimate relationship with the Savior, I missed that it began with a prayer. In my defense, Jesus says God's truths are revealed to babes. This is descriptive of your host. Did you know your relationship, including prayer, is an answer to this prayer of Jesus: At that time Jesus answered and said, "I praise Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou didst hide these things from the wise and intelligent and didst reveal them to babes. 26 "Yes, Father, for thus it was well-pleasing in Thy sight. 27 "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son, except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 "For My yoke is easy, and My load is light." Matthew 11:25-30 To the glory of God, our salvation not only saves us from His wrath but restores the reason for our creation. To walk with Him in the cool of the day, getting to know Him as we are known for eternity. October Surprise 2022: A Call to Prayer Day 10 Devotional 90

October 10, 2022 - Inspired by J.C. Ryle’s treatise on Prayer. Drops July 15, @026 The extended introduction for our October episodes ends at the 7:20 mark, and while there is some benefit (I believe) in listening to it again, if you would like, you can fast forward to that mark and begin the episode. From here we get back to our look at “A Call to Prayer” but before we return, we look at the most emotional call, in my considered opinion, of our relationship with the God of our salvation. Jesus in tears cries out: 28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 “For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 Our rest comes as we seek Him in daily conference with our Savior. Daily we learn: Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, The God who is our salvation. Selah. Psalm 68:19 Thou hast also given me the shield of Thy salvation, And Thy right hand upholds me; And Thy gentleness makes me great. Psalm 18:35 And so to follow Him to a gentle soul, and carrying other’s burdens. 5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5 (Love)…”bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” “What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more.”  Robert Murray M’Cheyne Assistant Editor: Seven Jefferson Gossard www.freerangepreacyeronprayer.com freerangeprayer@gmail.com Facebook - Free Range Preacher Ministries Instagram: freerangeministries All our Scripture quotes are drawn from the NASB 1977 edition. October Surprise 2022: A Call to Prayer Day 7 Devotional 87

October 7, 2022 - Inspired by J.C. Ryle’s treatise on Prayer. Way back in season 6 of our podcast, we took an extended look at “A Call to Prayer” by J. C. Ryle; those episodes turned out to be some of our most popular. For the next few days, we want to revisit a sampling of those episodes. The extended introduction for our October episodes ends at the 7:20 mark, and while there is some benefit (I believe) in listening to it again, if you would like, you can fast forward to that mark and begin the episode. We turn shortly to our Biblical calls to our relationship with God, the definition of our faith; prayer is a command, and often we chase after that which does not satisfy. We are genuinely seeking God to quench our deepest needs. O God, Thou art my God; I shall seek Thee earnestly; My soul thirsts for Thee, my flesh yearns for Thee, In a dry and weary land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1 Thirst for the eternal, not the temporal. October Surprise 2022: A Call to Prayer Day 3

October 2, 2022 - Inspired by J.C. Ryle’s treatise on prayer. The extended introduction for our October episodes ends at the 7:20 mark, and while there is some benefit (I believe) in listening to it again, if you would like, you can fast forward to that mark and begin the episode. J.C. Ryle boldly asserts: “This is one of the common marks of all the elect of God, “They cry unto him day and night” (Luke 18:1). The Holy Spirit, who makes them new creatures, works in them the feeling of adoption, and makes them cry, “Abba, Father” (Rom. 8:15). The Lord Jesus, when he quickens them, gives them a voice and a tongue, and says to them, “Be dumb no more.” God has no dumb children. It is as much as They see their need of mercy and grace. They feel their emptiness and weakness. They can not do otherwise than they do. They must pray.” Do you pray? Feeling empty, sad, stressed? We may have problems and plans we might make, indeed need to make as a solution. However, our first call for perspective, hope, joy, and power should be to the God of all comfort. If you need a spiritual kick in the pants to ignite your prayer life, October is the month for you. Glory to God in the highest. “What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more.” Robert Murray M’Cheyne Assistant Editor: Seven Jefferson Gossard www.frponprayer.com freerangeprayer@gmail.com Facebook - Free Range Preacher Ministries Instagram: freerangeministries All our Scripture quotes are drawn from the NASB 1977 edition. Favorite Biblical Moments 1 A Very Foolish Assertion Mark 10

Joyful. Intimate conversation comes when we reveal ourselves to one another, as it is with God, when the Holy Spirit unveils to our eyes a treasure we failed to notice before. It took me years to notice when the rich young ruler made a very foolish assertion. “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.” Mark 10:29 Instead of chuckling at his claim to perfection, Mark tells us: “And looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him,” Mark 10:21a For the sake of love, Jesus tried again; in short, give up your stuff, give up your pride, and follow me. When the Bible calls us to humility, it's not a loss; it's better than the gain of the whole wide world. Our So what? The Almighty, Creator, King, Master, and perfect Judge, is also He who tells us: “Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. 14 For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.” “Oh Holy Ghost, let us never forget, Nothing in my hands I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress, Helpless, look to Thee for grace: Foul, I to the fountain fly. “Rock of Ages” Wash me, Savior, er I die. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:17 Brethren, let’s pray for one another. Jesus Teaches Prayer - Forgiveness: God is Serious

In my culture, forgiveness and its importance grow every day. This episode is a repeat of our episode on forgiveness. This episode was well received, and as you will hear, praying that 2023 will be a year of Jubilee and Forgiveness, and revisiting just how serious God is about His children forgiving as we have been forgiven, seems like a good idea. Thank You, Jesus! The host is weak, faltering, and wholly inadequate for the task, but the word of God is none of those. The call for the children of God to forgive is serious, and the Bible uses: Serious Command as witnessed by: Commands Matthew 6:14 Mark 11:25 Allusions: Matthew 5:43-45 Philippians 2:3ff Exhortations: Ephesians 4:29-32 Romans 13 Serious Discipline: David was disciplined through Embarrassment; 2 Samuel 2:12 Physical Pain: Psalm 32 & 38 The regret of others paying for his sins: 2 Samuel 24:17 We have only updated the introduction.
