Bipolar Disorder 2 with Steve Wilson

DISCLAIMER: THIS EPISODE DISCUSSES RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT. IF THIS IS A TOUCHY TOPIC FOR YOU PLEASE SKIP THIS EPISODE. Welcome back to another episode of The Chinanna Show where I interviewed Steve Wilson the author of the book call Tethering. Below is a synopsis of the book TEETERING, my bipolar journey, is the story of my lifelong battle for balance. For most of my 74 years, I have suffered from bipolar disorder. Descending into the depths of suicidal intentions or rising to the high of watching the births of my children, I have endured a roller coaster ride of epic proportions. My memoir takes the reader on a chronological journey of emotions recounting my rape when I was nine years old, my desire to take my own life, and my attempt to kill my father. It recounts my voyage through therapy and my successes and failures using prescribed psychological medications and highlights my recovery. For the last seven years, I have been the facilitator of two mental health support groups in Phoenix, Arizona. Through my own experiences and those of the numerous people I have worked with, I consider myself to be knowledgeable on real-life bipolar disorder. TEETERING is both a deeply personal memoir and a call to action, rallying the reader to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental illness and find the support they need to resurrect their lives. TEETERING has been released on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. If you have an interest in learning more about TEETERING Please visit  swwilson.wilson@gmail.com.

How to feel better about starting your journey to getting better ft Niall Higgins

Productivity is not an easy task these days with the number of distractions that are present in our lives. This makes it hard to start any new journey we embark upon and to familiarize ourselves with the steps it will take to achieve the goal without suffering through it. Today I sit down with Nile Higgins, a self-improvement coach and singer from South Africa, to discuss ways in which we can make the transition easier for ourselves.   Episode takeaway: 1) Start off small. Highlight the motion steps you can be taking right now towards your main goal. This will help you remain focused on the goal without feeling overwhelmed. It also gives you appreciation for the journey because each small moment allows you to feel gratitude towards the main goal.   2) Try to meet yourself where you are. If you already enjoy a particular task, try to pair it with something you enjoy, for example. I love reading, so I use reading as a way of healing by finding books on things I am currently struggling with. 3) Motivation is not always going to be present every day. Sometimes you are not able to cultivate motivation, and you just have to start the process to develop motivation towards what you want to accomplish.   4) Remember to accept yourself for who you are. You are not a constant self-improvement project. You don't always have to try fixing yourself; by doing that, you are telling yourself that something is always wrong with you. It is all about balance and feeling satisfied with what you do. For more information on the topic, please check out the podcast episode. The destigmatization of men seeking mental health assitance

In the past, men have been socialized to believe that seeking help is a sign of weakness. This has led to a culture where men are less likely to seek help for their mental health issues or personal problems. However, in recent years, there has been a growing movement to destigmatize seeking help among men. One reason for this shift is the recognition that mental health issues affect everyone regardless of gender. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, men are less likely than women to seek help for mental health issues, despite the fact that they are just as likely to experience these issues. This is due in part to the societal expectation that men should be strong and self-reliant. In this episode we cover ways in which we can start the process of destigmatization, talking points include: 1) Raise awareness about the importance of mental health and to provide resources for men who may be struggling. This includes providing access to therapy, support groups, and other mental health services that are tailored to men's needs. 2) Men may face unique challenges when seeking mental health support. For example, men may feel pressure to conform to traditional gender roles and may be hesitant to seek help for fear of being seen as weak or vulnerable. Mental health services that are tailored to men's needs and provide a safe and supportive environment can help address these concerns and encourage more men to seek help. 3) Another way to destigmatize seeking help among men is by providing accessible and affordable mental health services. Many men may be hesitant to seek help due to financial concerns or lack of access to resources. By making mental health services more accessible and affordable, more men may be willing to seek help when they need it. In conclusion, while progress has been made in destigmatizing men seeking help, there is still more work to be done. By continuing to raise awareness, providing accessible and affordable mental health services, and addressing the unique challenges that men may face, we can encourage more men to seek the assistance they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
