5.8 Toldos 5785

1) I have a non-Jewish lodger in my home. Does the door to his room need a mezuzah?[1] 2) We had six men reciting the Amidah together. May one of those who lagged behind take over for the Repetition of the Amidah?[2] 3) I mixed up the wires and plugged in the crock-pot with the cholent to the time-switch and the hotplate remained on. May I lift the cholent while still hot and place it on the hotplate?[3] 4) I own two let-out properties and I live on the rental income. Recently I needed to spend substantially on repairs on one of the properties. Do I need to give Maaser on the rent from the other property?[4] 5) As a celiac-sufferer, my bread needs to be gluten-free. If I combine de-glutenised wheat flour with other flours that halachically aren’t considered as grain, what proportion of the dough does the wheat-flour need to be for me to be yoitze Lechem Mishneh etc.?[5] 6) My mechanic messed me about so I had to rent a car. Is he liable for my costs?[6] 7) After Havdolo, is Brocho Acharona said before or after reciting veYitein Lecho?[7] 8) We are moving our Shul into new premises. On the east side, just across the alley, is a church. 1) Feedback on shape of Tallis-Koton: details of the TK of the Previous Rebbe זי"ע: 2) I’m visiting Tromso (69° N) next month. There will be no daylight. How do I work out times for Shabbos & Tefilos?[1] 3) One who said he will give a specific amount of money to a Shul. He has since fallen out with that community. Is he still obliged to donate the amount he said he would give? Could he give that amount to a different Shul?[2] 4) When washing Netilas Yodayim in the morning, our custom is to say the brochoafter drying one’s hands. Why not before drying, like when washing for bread?[3] 5) May Chafing-Dish fuel be used for lighting Menorah?[4] 6) At Shabbos lunch we ate challa that was warmed in an oven with meat. Must we wait six hours before having pizza after Shabbos?[5] 7) Reuven is making an event on Sunday and he needs a singer. The Friday before the event, Reuven meets Shimon and offers him the job. Shimon agrees and gives his price, to which Reuven was agreeable. Within the hour Shimon re-evaluated and decided that he had undercharged. He immediately informs Reuven. That afternoon Reuven confirmed that Shimon has the job. Sunday, after the event, Reuven pays Shimon the revised price, but alleges that Shimon had been dishonest. 1) At Birkas Kohanim, does the Chazan answer Omein to the blessings of the Kohanim?[1] 2) I wish to dismantle my Sukkah towards the end of Sukkos (because the weather forecast predicts strong winds). Is that permitted?[2] 3) My front door opens to a porch that has walls on either side but is totally open to the street. May I carry there on Shabbos?[3] 4) On Shabbos we don’t take medicine for a minor condition. What about Yomtov[4]; 2nd day Yomtov; 2nd day of Rosh haShono?[5] 5) There was no Kohen in Shul. A Kohen was called from another building. But by the time he arrived, Musaf-repetition was over. Any chance of a stand-alone blessing then?[6] 6) Why do Chabad Taleisim have an extra hole on each corner?[7] 7) Why is the neck-hole of Chabad Taleisim-Ketanim round, whilst many others have it T-shaped?[8] 8) On Friday the 2nd day of Succos, I placed the cholent in the crock-pot just before Shabbos. I now realise that I shouldn’t have done so. [2] במשנה (סוכה פ"ד מ"ח) איתא שלא יתיר סוכתו אע"פ שגמר לאכול בשביעי. הובא בשו"ע או"ח סי' תרסו ס"א. בס' 'בסוד לוי יצחק' (ע' 253) מובא הרמז בזה שהתורה מתחלת ומסתיימת באותיות ב' ל' – רמז ל"בל תגרע" ו"בל תוסיף". האותיות הסמוכות הן: 'אך' ו'גם' – מיעוט ותוספת. ובס' הנ"ל מצביע על הלכתא דידן, שאין לפרק הסוכה לפני סוף יום ז' [בל תגרע], ואילו הבא לשבת בסוכה ביום ח' צריך לפרק ד' על ד' טפחים מהסכך – שלא ייראה כמוסיף! אך למעשה רבו המקילים בזה לצורך – ראה פסקי תשובות סי' תרלח אות ג; נטעי גבריאל פ"ל ס"ח. 5.3 Breishis 5785

1) Why do we say ומנחתם twice, once after each of the verses of the korbanos in Musaf of Chol haMoed Succos, yet we don’t say ומנחתם for the korbanos of Shabbos?[1] 2) Use of a pickup van for a mobile Succah: the exterior walls measure 10 tefochim, the interior walls are only 5 tefochim. Are those walls adequate for our Succah?[2] 3) Reuven suffered a stroke ר"ל and is therefore now more capable with his left hand than with his right hand. Upon which arm should he place his Tefillin?[3] 4) On Friday evening I noticed at our Beis Chabad that the hotplate for the cholent was switched off, but the cholent was still hot. This was to be the only hot food for the crowd we were expecting for the meal on Shabbos day in the Succah. I instructed a non-Jew to reconnect the hotplate. Was that permitted?[4] 5) If I decide to wear a flag [at a parade], does it need to have Tzitzis?[5] 6) May I take advantage of an excellent deal: to buy a ticket for a Shabbos flight with a Jewish-owned company that flies on Shabbos; I will then cancel the outgoing part of the ticket. They will then resell the seat to another traveler. Kosher? And perhaps I shouldn’t be patronizing a Jewish company that contravenes Shabbos? 7) To save on my energy bill, may a Goy switch on my crock-pot this Friday morning?[6] 8) May we give children sparklers on Simcha Torah, to be lit from an existing flame?[7] 9) After bentsching, some of our guests went out of the Succah. We called them back for dessert: apple-strudel! 5.2 Motzei Shabbos Chol HaMoed Succos 5785

1) Why do we say שהחיינו for Shofar on the 2nd day of Rosh HaShono, but we don’t say שהחיינו when bentshing Lulav on the 2nd day of Succos?[1] 2) I have no option to do Kapporos locally with a chicken, so I’ve been doing it with money. I’ve now read that it is preferable to delegate and to request someone to do it on my behalf with a chicken. Would you recommend that I do so?[2] 3) One who lost a parent on the 18th of Elul, may he have a haircut on Chol HaMoed?[3] 4) My rental of my dwelling includes a parking spot. I don’t have a car, so I rent out the spot. A) Should I give Maaser from the income; B) May I keep rent for Shabbos?[4] 5) I was taught that when giving utensils as a gift, Tevilas Keilim must be left for the recipient to do. [7] בשו"ת אגרות משה (או"ח ח"ד סי' קא:א) דן בעניית האשה לברכת 'שהחיינו' בליל יו"ט, אחרי שכבר בירכה בהדלקת נרות. הוא מתיר לה לענות, כי היא כרוכה לברכות המקדש. זה לא יועיל בנדו"ד.
