25th Episode Extravaganza Featuring NHL Legend Jeremy Roenick
This week for our 25th episode John welcomes NHL legend Jeremy Roenick to the show to discuss his iconic career, the many evolutions in the sport of hockey, and his outspoken position on everything from NHL refs, the toxicity of social media, and the challenges and rewards that come with entrepreneurship and investing.
Jeremy Roenick is a former professional hockey player who played the majority of his career in Chicago alongside fellow legends Chris Chelios and Ed Belfour. He was drafted 8th overall in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft by the Blackhawks, for whom he played from 1988 to 1996. Roenick subsequently played for the Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks over the course of his 20 year career. He also represented Team USA in several international tournaments including The Olympic Games. On November 10, 2007, Jeremy became only the third American-born player to score 500 goals. After retiring in 2009, Roenick joined NBC Sports as a hockey analyst and in 2010 began his path towards furthering his entrepreneurial goals.
This was a wide ranging chat that includes exploring Jeremy’s many experiences both on and off the ice. We dive into everything from broadcasting, entrepreneurship, and real estate investment. Jeremy reflects on the challenges that came with being drafted at the age of 18, his infamous Blackhawks trade, and his true thoughts about that controversial decision that led him to Phoenix, Philadelphia, LA, and eventually San Jose. In addition, John talks with Jeremy about his experiences at NBC and how ultimately… “the media created a Jeremy Roenick that really does not exist.”
Listeners will also hear about Jeremy’s newest entrepreneurial journey, co-founding Whiskey in the Wild, a high-end, triple distilled, blended chocolate whiskey that aims to appeal to a diverse audience of spirit lovers who may not think of whiskey as their drink of choice. Jeremy breaks down the company's love for their creation, insistence on quality, and shares their vision for providing a deliciously drinkable whiskey that is not your grandpa's jet fuel.

Blaine is President and CEO of Avatar Resources Inc, a consulting firm he founded in 1987. He has served clients in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and the United States. While living in Japan in the early 1980’s, he managed the business and international consulting division of one of the largest and most successful Human Resource Development and Consulting organizations in Asia. Blaine is also Founder of the Institute for Compassionate Capitalism, a Managing Director of the Global Coaching Alliance, an Adjunct Professor at China’s Beijing University, Dean of Education at the World Business Academy, and a member of the teaching faculty at the American Association for Physician Leadership.
In this hour, Blaine helps listeners make the important distinctions between market models and sociopolitical models while breaking down the principles of what he calls Compassionate Capitalism. Blaine illustrates why he believes that the single most important purpose of business is to enhance the likelihood of their employees to thrive. He shares why the practice of valuing the soul of your business, while never forsaking your core values and relationships, is a trait of so many successful ventures. In addition to discussing relationship building and leadership, Blaine and John reflect upon shared business experiences and why the tunnel vision of shareholder supremacy can be an achilles heel for leaders.
Blaine is fond of saying “the primary focus of what I do is built upon a foundation that focuses on returning to or regaining the soul of your business – that esprit that gives what you do meaning and vitality and connects to everything your business touches.” This focus on your business's unique aspects along with the curation of relationships and focusing on internal relationships while avoiding the dangers of singular growth is an organizing principle in this conversation. Implementing this mindset shift from being a center of accumulation to a center of distribution lies at the core of Blaines' work and mission and John is excited to unpack that message in this episode.
