    Ep. 198 - Douglas Pacaccio, DPM, FACFAS - Fellowship Director/Inventor/Educator

    Dean’s Chat hosts, Drs. Jensen and Richey, welcome Dr. Douglas Pacaccio, director of the Northwest Illinois Foot and Ankle Surgical Fellowship program. Dr. Pacaccio graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign with a dual degree in biology and philosophy-focused on ethics.  In interview you will hear how this has helped shape his perspective and viewpoint.  He went on to complete his podiatric medical degree with Rosalyn Franklin University and did his 3-year surgical residency with the prestigious Inova Fairfax program.  He continued his education with a plastic surgery fellowship at Georgetown University Medical Center and then moved back to Illinois to start his practice with his wife who is also a podiatrist. Tune in as we discussed all things podiatric medicine and surgery, including how Fellowship impacted his own career and now what his thoughts are regarding fellowship training with special insights from a current fellowship director.     Ep. 197 - Maryellen Brucato, DPM, FACFAS - ACFAS/AO North America/All Things Private Practice!

    Welcome to Dean’s Chat, where Drs. Jensen and Richey discuss all things podiatric medicine and surgery! Todays guest is Dr. Maryellen Brucato! Dr. Brucato is currently the owner of Brucato foot and ankle surgery in Clifton New Jersey. She is board-certified in both Rearfoot and Forefoot surgery and completed her undergraduate degree with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and a minor in Spanish at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. She went on to complete her Doctorate of Podiatric Medical degree at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Pennsylvania. She then went on to complete a three year surgical residency program with Morristown Medical Center. Listen, as she discusses her experiences of joining a practice out of residency, helping build, and sustaining that practice moving up as a medical director and then CEO and what prompted her interest to leave and start her own practice.     Ep. 196 - Dr. Wayne Bakotic and Dr. Warren Joseph - Experts in Dermatopathology/Infectious Disease!

    Dean’s Chat hosts,  Dr. Jeffrey Jensen  and Dr. Johanna Richey, are  joined by Dr. Wayne Bakotic and Dr. Warren Joseph on today's show discussing their careers and their specialties that overlap in dematopathology and infectious disease.   Discussions range from PCR testing for both fungus and bacteria, to their careers, their influence in the podiatric community, the advancement of AI in medicine, and relationship among specialists. A wonderful discussion, you'll wonder where 45 minutes went! Dr. Wayne L. Bakotic began his medical training with early acceptance into Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine where he completed his biomedical sciences degree through his podiatric medical studies. Prior to graduation, Dr. Bakotic left his podiatry training to initiate studies in Osteopathic medicine at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. It was, however, his time at Barry University which set the stage for his interest in podiatric pathology. After graduating with honors and completing his Doctor of Osteopathy in 1998, Dr. Bakotic continued his journey at Emory University School of Medicine where he gained training in anatomic and clinical pathology. He remained at Emory University to complete fellowship training in surgical pathology, Cytopathology and Dermatopathology, gaining board certification in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and Dermatopathology. In 2008 Dr. Bakotic co-founded Bako Diagnostics in Alpharetta, GA with the goal of serving the podiatric medical community and where he continues in the role of Chief Medical Officer.  Dr. Joseph a leader in our profession and a member of the Podiatric Hall of Fame. Dr. Joseph is a specialist in the treatment of lower extremity infectious diseases. He received his podiatric degree from the Wm. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. Dr Joseph completed his postgraduate training in podiatric medicine/surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital, and a fellowship in infectious diseases at Hahnemann University School of Medicine, both in Philadelphia. He is currently an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine at Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ. Dr. Joseph is a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and is an author of the IDSA Diabetic Foot Infection Guidelines. He is also certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and currently serves as Editor of the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association. Dr Joseph lectures extensively and his presentations have focused on the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections of the lower extremity.     Ep. 195 - Gerit Mulder, DPM, PhD - Researcher/Innovator/Educator

    Dean's Chat hosts, Drs. Jensen and Richey, welcome Dr. Gerit D. Mulder to the podcast!  Dr. Mulder gave Dr. Jensen an opportunity to join his practice at the Wound Healing Institute after residency, providing a tremendous foundation for future research that included the National Institutes of Health, and Department of Defense opportunities.  Dr. Mulder has a storied history in podiatric medical research in the wound care space.  He received his BS at University of Redlands; a masters degree from Cal State - San Bernadino, then received his DPM from the College of Podiatric Medicine. He received his PhD from Chulalongkorn University through University of California San Diego specializing in Biomedical Sciences/Stem Cells.  Gerit speaks 5 languages and has taught wound care, and implemented wound care programs around the world.  Tune in for a fabulous interview!     Ep. 193 - The Podiatry Foundation - Leaders in Education, Research and Student Recruitment!

    Drs. Jensen and Richey welcome members of The Podiatry Foundation to Dean's Chat!  The Podiatry Foundation was founded in 2012 as the result of the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine's integration into Kent State University.  Today's discussion is a highlight of The Podiatry Foundation's work in giving back to the podiatric community in the areas of education, research, and now....yes....Student Recruitment.  Enjoy!  Below are biographies of our guests from the Podiatry Foundation: Eugene M. Pascarella, DPM, FACFAS, MBA Executive Director Gene M. Pascarella has served on The Podiatry Foundation Board of Trustees (formerly The OCPM Foundation) since 2012. In September 2024, he was appointed Executive Director.  He holds a 1982 degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and received his MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2002. Currently, Dr. Pascarella serves as a Regional Medical Director for Upperline Health. He is also a faculty member at Advent Health Hospital System, teaching podiatric residents.   Dr. Pascarella has also served on the Board of Trustees of the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine from 2008 until 2012. He currently serves on the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine Advisory Board, where he served as Chair of that board from 2013-2018. In recognition for his contributions, he received the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine Ambassador Award in 2015, the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine Alumni Service Award in 2017 and was inducted into the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine Hall of Fame in 2022. Victoria J. Newman, CPA, MBA Chair Philanthropic Impact and Strategy Committee Executive Committee Victoria Newman has served on The Podiatry Foundation Board (formerly the OCPM Foundation Board) since 2022. She is a graduate of John Carroll University and Cleveland State University, with Accountancy and MBA degrees. Ms. Newman’s professional experience spans twenty years in the non-profit sector, in the areas of Audit Services at Howard Wershbale & Company, and Finance and Philanthropy at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland Clinic London and Case Western Reserve University. Currently, Ms. Newman is the Assistant Dean of Finance and Business Administration at Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University.  Prior to her current role, she served as Executive Director at Case Western Reserve University, with oversight of the University’s endowment management. Nilin M. Rao has served on The Podiatry Foundation Board of Trustees since 2022 and serves on the Research and Education Committee.  He then pursued his master’s degree, followed by simultaneous doctoral degrees from Kent State University, completing his DPM as well as a PhD, in exercise physiology.  He then completed a three-year Podiatric Surgical Residency at Highlands-Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s (PSL) Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, where he served as Chief Resident during his final year. This was followed by an additional one-year fellowship in advanced foot/ankle reconstruction, sports injuries and foot/ankle trauma at the prestigious Silicon Valley Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Fellowship with Sutter Health-Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Mountain View, California. Dr. Rao currently serves on the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine Advisory Board, Kent State Exercise Physiology Advisory Board, American Board of Foot & Ankle Surgery Communications Committee, and is one of the founding members of the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine Alumni Alliance. Dr. Rao is a Diplomate of both the American Board of Foot & Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, and a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Dr. Rao is in private practice in Austin, Texas.  Nicki D. Nigro, DPM Chair of the Executive Committee Chair Research and Education Committee Dr. Nicki Nigro joined The Podiatry Foundation Board of Trustees (formerly the OCPM Foundation) in 2021.  She was appointed Chair for the Executive Committee in September 2024 and serves as Chair for the Research and Educational Committee. She attended the University of Arkansas and obtained her B.S. in Exercise Science and Physiology in 1985. While working on this degree, Dr. Nigro was introduced by a colleague to the field of Podiatry. She received her Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Des Moines University (College of Podiatric Medicine & Surgery) in 1989. She completed her surgical training at The Podiatry Hospital of Pittsburgh in foot and ankle surgery. Dr. Nigro is board certified in Foot Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. She has been practicing medicine in the Pittsburgh area since 1991. She sees patients at the Glenshaw, Vandergrift, and Natrona Heights offices. She is a member of the Residency Committee for The Western Pennsylvania Podiatric Surgical Residency Program.
