How can we become better at listening to each other? – The Shema series E3

How can we model God’s love, and show what it looks like to love others, by truly listening? In this episode, Noël, Esther and special guest Siân Rees discuss how Christians can become better listeners, both inside and outside the church context.  They emphasise that listening begins with love, humility and attention: choosing to prefer others, resist distractions and be fully present. They reflect on Scripture, including James’ call to be quick to listen and slow to speak, the unity of the early Church in Acts, and Jesus’ use of questions and parables. They explore good listening as a spiritual discipline shaped by prayer, Scripture, community and the Holy Spirit.  The conversation highlights the need for patience, empathy and self-examination, especially when discussing faith with those who think differently. How do we listen to God? – The Shema series E2

How does God speak to people and how can they discern that it is really his voice? What does it mean to truly listen to God and obey him? In this episode, Noël, Mark and Esther explore the close connection between listening and obedience in the life and journey of faith.  Beginning with the idea that God listens to his people, they reflect on the wonder of prayer and the two-way nature of relationship with God. Through the story of Samuel in 1 Samuel 3, they consider how God speaks, the importance of learning to recognise his voice, and the role of Scripture and community in testing what we hear. They also discuss dreams, openness to God, and the dangers of spiritual abuse when people claim unquestionable authority.  Moving on to Acts 5, the conversation highlights the apostles’ boldness in obeying God rather than bowing to human pressure. They explore how listening to God requires trust, faith and obedience, whether God speaks in dramatic ways or through the ‘ordinary’ means of Scripture, prayer and daily Christian life. Timestamps (00:00) - Intro (01:27) - God listens to us – the foundation of relationship (03:32) - God speaks to us and we learn to listen to him – 1 Samuel 3: God calls Samuel (05:39) - The importance of discernment (07:21) - Are we more open and receptive to hearing from God in dreams? What is the Shema prayer? – The Shema series E1

What does the Hebrew word Shema mean and what is the significance of the Shema prayer? Welcome to the first episode of our series on the Shema prayer and what the Bible has to say about listening.  In this episode, Noël, Mark and Esther explore the scriptures in the books of Deuteronomy and Numbers that form the Shema and discuss how this daily prayer can shape our identity, desires and the way we live. They reflect that listening to God is about more than just hearing his words; it involves obedience that displays itself in practical action and personal transformation. Mercy over judgement: the woman caught in adultery – bonus episode

Why has this story been included in the biblical canon? What does it reveal about Jesus’ divine position as just lawgiver and merciful judge? In this bonus episode, returning special guest Stuart Ford joins Esther and Mark to discuss the story of the woman caught in adultery from John 8.1–11. We explore the complexities of the narrative, including the authenticity of the passage and its inclusion in Scripture, the agenda of the Pharisees and scribes, and what Jesus’ response reveals about him. We draw out the profound themes of mercy, judgement and forgiveness.  The discussion highlights the vulnerability of the woman, the hypocrisy and hard-heartedness of the accusers and the transformative power of Jesus' response. Ultimately, the conversation emphasises the call for Christians to embody the forgiveness and mercy on offer through Jesus in their lives. 6. Abiding in Christ and fruitfulness – The I Am series E6

Abiding in Christ and fruitfulness – The I Am series E6

What does it mean for Jesus to be the true vine, or vineyard? What does it mean to abide in Christ and be fruitful? In this episode, Noël and Mark are joined by special guest Chantelle Baker, to discuss the final I Am statement in John’s Gospel: ‘I am the vine; you are the branches’ (John 15.5). We begin by exploring how this verse has been translated. Should it in fact be rendered, ‘I am the vineyard and you are the vine’ and does this change the meaning of the metaphor? The conversation touches on the wider use and significance of ‘vine’ imagery in the Bible, before exploring what it means to abide or remain in Christ. Thinking about fruitfulness, we look at the connection between who we are and what we do – the relationship between faith and works – and the many different expressions of this we might see in community. We finish by asking who or what the fruit of the vine is for and sharing our personal reflections. What is truth? – The I Am series E5

In what sense is Jesus ‘the way, the truth, and the life’? What was the significance of his words about his Father’s house? In this episode, we’re joined by Jack Morris, our producer, to discuss Jesus' statement in John 14: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life'. As well as unpacking the significance of each word, asking what Jesus meant by ‘way’, ‘truth’, and ‘life’, we explore the wider context in John’s Gospel for Jesus saying this and the picture he provides of his Father’s house.  The conversation touches on the interaction between Jesus and the confused and questioning disciples and his words of comfort to them. It delves into the need for us to have a relationship with Jesus, the nature of truth and how Jesus reveals truth, and what constitutes the fullness of life. Jesus, the good shepherd – The I Am series E4

How does Jesus fulfil the role of the good shepherd? How does the use of shepherding imagery in John 10 compare to how it is used in Ezekiel 34? In this episode we're joined by special guest Michael Pfundner to explore John 10, where Jesus identifies himself as both the good shepherd and the gate for the sheep. We explore the significance of Jesus' statement in relation to Old Testament use of sheep and shepherding imagery, such as that found in Psalm 100 and Ezekiel 34. The discussion also touches on New Testament examples including the parable of the lost sheep in Matthew 18. We consider the responsibility of church leaders today to shepherd their flocks well, and the responsibility of the sheep, believers in Jesus, to learn to both discern and follow God's voice.
