Sylvester Stallone stars as Ricky Testaforte in “The Knockout Stage”
14/04/2020
Ricky Testaforte (Sylvester Stallone) is a star in the New York City boxing leagues when his life is turned upside down. A remark about his deceased mother causes Ricky to see red and headbutt his opponent, leading to a lifetime ban from all boxing-related activities. As he drowns his sorrows in the nearby bar he is approached by Jack Parry, a playboy football agent who went to private school with the Everton owner. He offers Ricky the chance of a new life as a soccer star in the UK which, with no education and a young family to provide for, Ricky accepts: "I've never even kicked a damn ball!" / "You're not too bad with your head though, mate." Ricky arrives in Liverpool and, after a number of hilarious Bronx-Scouse misunderstandings and a press conference in which he refers to Everton as "the Candies", plays his first match: a European game, the club deciding to rest the regular team as they seemingly have no hope of qualifying from the so-called Group of Death. Incredibly, Testaforte becomes a cult figure in Everton's European campaign by scoring a hatful of headed goals against continental heavyweights. Just as things seem on the up, disaster strikes when a famous Spanish manager is brought in to improve Everton's league form. Unable to adapt to his signature brand of "toki-tuka" football, Ricky is told he is no longer needed and the club is planning to run out his one-year contract. Things go from bad to worse when it turns out that hotshot agent Jack Parry had lost all his money by betting on Ricky's original boxing match and had struck a deal with the New York mob to pay his huge debts. With the mob on the prowl in Liverpool, Ricky and Jack are forced to take refuge in rural Italy with a distant Testaforte relative where they make an astonishing discovery: the European cup bonus written into Ricky's contract would be precisely enough to repay the mob. As they follow Everton's European run in the local tavern, Ricky is called back to the first team as the only fit striker—the new manager's intensive training regime causing the squad to be ravished by injury—and finds himself on the bench for the European Cup final. With no other option, Testaforte is brought on in the second half as the game sits in the balance. With the mob sat directly behind the sweating Jack Parry and the advice of his elderly Italian relative ringing in his ears, Ricky has just 20 minutes to save the day. But as the crowd starts chanting about his mother and the final whistle approaches, can he keep his head?
