    The Audacity To Hope

    When the topic of the 2024 Election comes up Black women have been bracing for impact. Will we be subjected to hairbrained ideas explaining the results? Or will we be forced to sooth our co-workers as they process the “ish” we already knew; this country is a terrible place for marginalized people, especially Black women.  A study by the University of Colorado estimates a 24% increase in maternal deaths if the United States bans abortion federally. They predicted the increase would be even higher for Black patients, at 39%. While your co-workers look for comfort you remember we are not new to this, we’re true to this. Black women create hope for our communities, and others, when the future looks bleak.     When Black women are healers it’s not only seen as illegitimate but “wicked.” With the rise of social media and “Insta-doctors” sharing information such as herbs, and other medicinal tools, has become rampant. Therefore we re-enter an age where empowered women of color are questioned and feared. This has happened before. In 1962 Tituba Indian, a slave of west Indian descent was accused of witchcraft and set off the Salem witch trials. How does the woo’woo witch hunt affect modern herbalists creating businesses that aim to heal?     On July 6th, 2024 Sonya Massey called the police to her home in fear of a home intruder. Body cam footage spread all over the internet of her last moments. We watched her call out the true demon in her home, and that principality ended her life and disrespected her body. This word gives us the ick, but here on the Audacity Podcast, we are triggered. Many black women facing racial trauma are living in a prolonged state of PTSD. No matter where we are, our worlds aren’t safe from microaggressions or even physical violence. No matter how safe we try to feel, our bodies keep the “score.” What do we do when we are triggered? With the help of Krystal Miller (@Melanated_Masks), a licensed mental health worker and integrative mental health practitioner,  we will be unpacking just that.     The Audacity To Be Autistic, Black and Gifted

    Amanda Seales shocked the world when she revealed that she recently received an autism diagnosis. Amongst the Black community Autism Spectrum Disorder is rarely talked about, unless you count derogatory descriptions of neurodivergence. On her platform Free Black Motherhood she creates space for mothers to explore the realities of motherhood and celebrates the many different ways black women nurture children as well as work to destigmatize and release us from the wounds of motherhood with martyrdom. Where would we be without the audacious hopes, dreams, and prayers of Black women? Modern gynecology was built off of the torture of black women and when we look at the statistics we can see the medical apartheid towards us has done nothing but change shape. Black women have a 53 percent higher risk of dying in a hospital setting during childbirth, regardless of income level, insurance type, or any other social driver of health. We have suffered more from vitamin D Deficiency. We are dismissed as angry and attitudinal when we are depressed. The facts and figures seem hopeless but how do we begin to finally talk about solutions? The past has shown us that change starts with the brave work of imagining a better life. Black women, with audacity, imagined freedom when it was nothing but a fairy tale. The Audacity is a podcast centering the ideas of Black women, working on the front lines imagining, a better standard of health for us.
