Valve Services for LNG Startup and Commissioning Podcast

Some of the largest greenfield projects going on throughout the world are liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants. These huge projects liquefy natural gas for transport across the globe. Regasification plants take in the LNG and convert it back into natural gas for distribution throughout the pipeline network. In this podcast, Devin Cloud with one of Emerson’s Impact Partners, John H. Carter, and their ControlWorx Premier Service Provider organization, joins me to discuss one very successful project in the state of Louisiana along the Gulf of Mexico. The teamwork between the LNG producer, engineering, procurement & construction (EPC) contractor, and the Emerson team enabled planning, startup and commissioning challenges to be quickly addressed to keep the project advancing successfully. Give the podcast a listen and visit the Valves, Actuators and Regulators for the Entire LNG Value Chain section on Emerson.com for more information on the important valve solutions for reliable and efficient LNG operations. And, the service provider locator section can help you find your accredited valve, actuator & regulator provider in your area. Also, visit the LNG Success Podcast page to listen to other podcasts in this series. Transcript Jim: Hi, everyone. I'm Jim Cahill with another Emerson Automation Experts podcast. Today, we're on another episode in our four-part series that explores the role of control technologies in helping drive efficient and reliable LNG production. Emerson's valves, regulators, and actuators empower the entire LNG value chain from the liquefaction process to transport in terminals, and from project startup and commissioning to long-term facility operations and maintenance. I'm joined today by ControlWorx's Devin Cloud to talk about how an LNG liquefaction customer gained confidence in the startup and commissioning of their greenfield plant. ControlWorx is one of Emerson's premier service providers covering valves, regulators, and actuators, among other Emerson solutions. Devin has been a project manager for valve services for over 12 years. Welcome, Devin. Devin: Hey, Jim. Thanks for having me. I'm happy to be here. Let me say, I've listened to several podcasts. I think even my kids have listened to several podcasts in the truck. So, very excited about this opportunity. So, thank you for having me. Jim: All right. Let's hope we have something that even the kids can get into about LNG here. Devin: Let's hope so. Jim: So, could you give a brief description of the startup and commissioning services required for control valves, isolation valves, and actuators at an LNG plant? Devin: I think I'll start off on this one as saying, for the LNGs that we've been doing this in our territory, hindsight, looking back is, we had to rethink what we thought we knew.  And so, what I mean by that is, when we start...we say startup and commissioning services. And we've done this often. We've done it at many customer sites.

Simplifying Recipe Creation in the Life Sciences Podcast

Manufacturing execution systems have been indispensable in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries to orchestrate manufacturing operations among the various enterprise and plant control and analytical systems. As the industry rapidly changes and needs to provide more personalized medicines and therapies, simpler, lighter-weight recipe creation and workflow management applications are required. In this Emerson Automation Experts podcast, Melissa Lee and Kebra Tynan join me to discuss how Emerson is helping these manufacturers address these challenges with a software-as-a-service (SaaS) based workflow management solution. Give the podcast a listen and visit the DeltaV Workflow Management section on Emerson.com to learn more about optimizing the lifecycle development of your novel medicines and therapies. Transcript Jim: Hi, everyone. I'm Jim Cahill, and this is another "Emerson Automation Experts" podcast. Traditional MES solutions often come with significant challenges, including lengthy implementation times, the need for specialized technical expertise, and extensive IT infrastructure requirements. These hurdles can be particularly burdensome for the advanced therapy medicinal products, or ATMP market, especially in the process development and pre-commercial manufacturing phases, where agility and efficiency are crucial. To overcome these obstacles, Emerson recently launched DeltaV Workflow Management, an exciting new software as a service, or SaaS product, that directly addresses these challenges. Joining us in today's podcast are Melissa Lee, the Life Sciences Recipe Solution Manager, and Kebra Tynan, the Life Sciences Product Manager, to tell us more about this exciting new product. Welcome, ladies! Melissa: Hi, Jim! Kebra: Thank you! Jim: Hey, it's great having you both here, spending a little bit of time with us, to share your expertise with our listeners. Would you both mind sharing a bit about your background, and what led you into your current roles with us at Emerson? Melissa: Sure, happy to kick us off here, Jim, and I'll go ahead with quick introduction and background, and how I got to become, to be the Life Sciences Recipe Solution Manager. So, to begin my story, I graduated from UC Berkeley, with a degree in chemical engineering, and began my career as a process engineer in the semiconductor industry. And over the span of, I think, six and a half, seven years, I took on increasing responsibilities within that industry, progressing from being an engineer to roles such as lab scientist, and then eventually moving to the business side of things, and becoming a proposal manager. And that's really how I joined Emerson. I started in the North America Proposals Group, and then later transitioned to the role of operational readiness manager within our PSS [Process Systems & Solutions] Global Lifecycle Services Organization, where I provided support to our local field service offices, worldwide. And prior to this role that I have now, I spent two years leading strategic accounts in our Life Sciences North America sales team, working closely with our North America sales channel, which is also known here as our Emerson Impact Partners, and also key industry players such as BMS, Amgen, and Pfizer, while at the same time pursuing my MBA degree, through UT Austin's executive MBA program.

Unlocking LNG Success: How a Fisher™ JT Valve Supercharged a Main Cryogenic Heat Exchanger Podcast

Liquifying natural gas requires a process that lowers the temperature of this gas to around -260 degrees F (-160 degrees C). The Main Cryogenic Heat Exchanger (MCHE) is the primary piece of equipment responsible for the necessary cooling; therefore, it is widely recognized as the ‘Heart’ of the LNG facility. The valves responsible for controlling the flows must be rugged, reliable, and able to handle the temperatures and pressures involved in this extremely challenging process. The Joule-Thomson (JT) effect is leveraged throughout all the primary LNG liquefaction processes to achieve cooling of the feed gas or the refrigerant streams. JT control valves reduce the pressure of the fluid significantly and induce the desired cooling. Because of the elevated pressure drop, the control valve can experience excessive noise levels if not addressed properly. It also experiences very low process temperatures and must be capable of precise throttling down to full cryogenic temperatures. Reid Youngdahl joins me in this 30-minute podcast to discuss how we helped a major LNG producer overcome key production challenges by implementing Fisher JT Valves. Listen as we dive into the successful installation and the impactful results achieved in their operations. Give the podcast a listen and visit the Valves, Actuators and Regulators for the Entire LNG Value Chain section on Emerson.com for more on the products and solutions to drive reliable and efficient LNG production. Also, visit the LNG Success Podcast page to listen to other podcasts in this series. Transcript Jim: Hi, everyone, I'm Jim Cahill with another "Emerson Automation Experts" podcast. Today, we'll open a four-part series by exploring the role of control technologies in helping drive efficient and reliable LNG production performance. Emerson's valves, regulators, and actuators empower the entire LNG value chain, from liquefaction to the transport and terminal of LNG, and from project startup and commissioning to long-term facility operations and maintenance. Emerson's Reid Youngdahl joins me to discuss a great success story in which a Fisher JT control valve improved the performance of the main cryogenic heat exchanger at an LNG plant in Europe. Welcome, Reid. Reid: Hi, Jim. Thanks for having me. Jim: Hey, it's great having you here on the podcast. Let's begin. Can you share your background and path to your current role here at Emerson? Reid: Sure. Yeah. So, I've been with Emerson for 11 years now. All that's been within our flow controls Fisher organization, primarily Fisher control valves, and that's been located here in our global headquarters up here at Marshalltown, Iowa. So, my current role is a valve technical specialist. So, I have the privilege to provide global support for our products. We're kind of broken up into industry groups to kind of provide better support to our end users. So, primarily, my applications are severe service support for the oil and gas industry with an emphasis on specializing in LNG. So, whether that's working with EPCs, doing sizing selection, consultation on large projects, or that could be supporting troubleshooting valves out in the field. And then, through that process, through the years, I have had the opportunity to work on a lot of these critical JT valves that we'll be talking about today, Jim. Jim: Well, that's a great background there. And yeah, I would think LNG with cryogenic temperatures is severe serv...

Taking a Proactive Approach to Comply with NAESB Standards Podcast

If you’re in the wholesale or resale natural gas or electric power business, then you’re likely familiar with the North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB). Their standards are designed to lead to a seamless marketplace for electricity and natural gas. Their membership includes about 300 corporate members and additional non-member volunteers who contribute to the drafting and adopting of NAESB standards. In this Emerson Automation Experts podcast, I’m joined by Martha Rendon to discuss NAESB and the challenges and solutions around standards compliance. Give the podcast a listen and visit the Order-to-Cash (O2C) Software for Energy Logistics section on Emerson.com for more information on how you can integrate all commercial activities (also known as order-to-cash) in a single software solution, resulting in greater efficiency, faster month-end closing, and improved compliance with local regulations, including NAESB. Transcript Jim: Hi, everyone. This is Jim Cahill with another Emerson Automation Experts podcast. The North American Energy Standards Board, known as NAESB, serves as an industry forum for the development and promotion of standards to advance marketplace efficiency for wholesale and retail natural gas and electricity. Today, I'm joined by Martha Rendon, who you may recall from an earlier podcast, to discuss the NAESB and its interactions in the industry. Welcome, Martha. Martha: Hello, Jim. Thank you so much for inviting me. Jim: Well, it's great to have you back with us. Let's open by asking you to share your background with our listeners. Martha: Okay. I am currently the Senior Product Manager for the Gas Commercial Solutions with Emerson. I have a bachelor's degree in computer science, and I am certified in project management professional, the PMP. Also, I have a certification in business design thinking. I have been working with Emerson for 16 years now, and working mainly with the gas management solution as commercial gas subject matter expert. You know, it is involved with the commercial gas business transportation processes mainly. Jim: Well, that sounds like great background for our discussion. So let's get into NAESB now. So what is NAESB, and what is its role in the gas industry? Martha: Yes, the NAESB, the North American Energy Standards Board, as you were indicating at the beginning, is the organization that plays an important role in the natural gas industry, as well as in the energy and electricity industry. They develop and promote the standards that are oriented to improve efficiency and ensure that the market is transparent. They have standards as well that are oriented to facilitate interoperability and ensure at the end that the market is efficient and competitive. In the U.S., we have in the gas sector is an open market. So the NAESB is working closely with the FERC, that is the agency, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in the U.S. to develop the standards that are aligned with that regulatory requirements. For instance, NAESB standards often incorporate into FERC orders that govern the natural gas industry. So that is mainly the role for the NAESB in the gas industry. Jim: Okay, so what is the importance of complying with the NAESB standards for gas pipelines and distribution companies? Martha: Yes, and as mentioned before, the natural gas business is a mature market in North America. So complying with these standards that NAESB is defined ...
