Why Good People Become Bad Bosses: The "Power vs Empowerment" Trap

What is the one word that makes corporate leaders more squeamish than "taxes" or "sex"? Power. In the coaching and development world, people are allergic to the word. It sounds dirty. It sounds like corruption. So, the word got rebranded to "Empowerment" because that feels safe. It feels internal. It feels like yoga. But in this episode, I argue that this semantic shift is actually dangerous. By confusing the feeling of empowerment with the physics of power, we are accidentally training a generation of leaders to be abrasive, isolated, and blind to their own impact. We cover: The Semantic Trap: Why we love "Empowerment" but hate "Power"—and why the distinction matters. The "Jerks" Paradox: How standard coaching advice ("Don't care what people think") can turn a well-meaning leader into a toxic boss. The Two Types of Power: The critical difference between Internal Agency (Self-Empowerment) and External Physics (Power Over resources and people). The AI Factor: Why Artificial Intelligence is about to make this power dynamic even more volatile. If you’ve ever wondered why so many "empowered" leaders seem to lack basic empathy, this episode unpacks the mechanism behind the behavior. Key Quote: "We have a generation of leaders who think they are 'empowered,' but they are actually just abrasive because they don't understand the tool they are holding." #PowerDynamics #LeadershipPsychology #CorporateCulture #ExecutiveCoaching #AbrasiveLeadership #ThePowerTrap #NeuroscienceOfLeadership #EmpowermentTrap #FutureOfWork #AILeadership Connect with Adele: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adele-wang/https://substack.com/@adelewang

The Million-Dollar AI Mistake Most Business Leaders Are About to Make -- for biz owners only

Most business leaders think they know how to profit from AI. Even though no one actually says it out loud, a lot of the push is coming from the desire to become more efficicent, reduce staff, and enjoy the jump in profitability. Those are certainly true. But by looking at AI with the lens, it's likely many business owners are also, at the same time, likely to miss the real opportunity worth millions. In this episode, AI consultant and leadership coach Adele Wang explains why the companies firing half their workforce might make short-term gains, but the companies keeping their people will dominate the market long-term. It's the story of two companies, similar to a gold rush analogy. By merely reducing staff and giving everyone better tools, it still presents some of the same assumptions that many business owners have about work in general. It's time to re-evaluate basic assumptions on "productivity". Through the story of two companies and a powerful gold rush analogy, you'll discover how business owners of the future will need to focus more on leadership than management. In other words, smart leaders of the future will look beyond mining gold with better tools, and be more interested in using their people to tap into the mother lode of opportunity. Perfect for: Business owners, executives, team leaders, and anyone implementing AI in their organization. Or if you just wonder about human nature, psychology and what runs through the minds of business leaders amidst a gold rush of AI... #BusinessPodcast #AIPodcast #LeadershipPodcast #TechPodcast #BusinessStrategy #AllThingsHuman #AdeleWang

Is AI Better at Being Human Than We Are? Here’s Why It Might Be, And How That Might Save Us All

🎙 Is AI Better at Being Human Than We Are? 🤯 Why is it so hard to have conversations with people who fundamentally disagree with us? If you're like me, it can make you anxious and stressed. But at the same time, maybe you actually DO want to understand how and why someone feels the way they do. Because you care about them...but... Maybe you're absolutely baffled at their world viewpoint. How and why do they feel the way they do?? Especially now... So maybe you've tried to have a thoughtful conversation online, only to watch it turn into a dumpster fire of misunderstandings, personal attacks, and outrage. No fun. We all like to think we’re open-minded, but the truth is, most people struggle to engage in real conversations about the things that actually matter—politics, social issues, values. The second emotions get involved, things go sideways. 💡 But what if AI could help? I honestly feel it can. It has, for me... In this episode, I explain how a wild idea: AI might actually be better at guiding nuanced, meaningful conversations than we are. Not because it’s smarter, but because it doesn’t get defensive, emotional, or shut people down. Humans, right now in history, lack the leadership, communication and emotional stamina for what's needed when trying to resolve issues that involve a lot of complexity. We just haven't been built for it, and now we must lean into it. I think AI can help us. In this episode I dive into: ✔ Why we’re losing the ability to handle complex conversations ✔ How social media has rewired our brains to crave outrage ✔ A simple way to use AI to explore perspectives you disagree with—without the usual emotional minefield ✔ How AI can teach us to listen, think, and communicate more effectively 🎧 If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, Why can’t people just talk to each other anymore?—this episode is for you. I hope you like this. 🔥 Hit play and let’s dive in. 📢 If this resonates with you, share it with a friend, subscribe, or leave a comment—I’d love to hear your thoughts.

    Stop Relating to Yourself—Just Live

We’ve been told to “build a better relationship with ourselves” as if we’re two separate people. But what if that’s the very thing keeping us stuck? In this episode, I explore a profound idea from The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle: the illusion of self-improvement. Basically, when we try to “fix” or “improve” our relationship with ourselves, we unconsciously create a split—one part observing, one part being judged. The pop psychology idea behind this is that if we have a good relationship with ourselves, (ie "I love myself") then we can have good relationships with other people. But what if this misses the point? What if we don't need a relationship with ourselves at all? What if the only thing that this whole thing in life is really about is to just be? There's a lot of freedom with that. Imagine -- you don’t need to negotiate with your mind. You don’t need another layer of self-help. Maybe you don't even need a ton of positive affirmations to convince your "self" that you are a good person. You just need to be. Not "be good" or "be loving", which sends everyone back into the judging and evaluative lens. But just be. This was one of Eckhart Tolle's main messages in his book,"The Power of Now", which I discuss. Share this with someone who could use a different perspective on personal development. You might make their day. #ThePowerOfNow #EckhartTolle #Mindfulness #StopOverthinking #SpiritualAwakening #PersonalGrowth #SelfImprovementTrap #JustBe #LiveInTheMoment #InnerPeace
