Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders will today urge Donald Trump to spell out what security guarantees he will offer Ukraine at a hastily arranged meeting in the wake of the US president’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.

At the talks in Alaska, the US president agreed with Putin to push for a peace agreement without an immediate ceasefire, which he had previously asked for. Afterwards, Putin demanded that Kyiv should concede land in order to reach a truce.

Trump’s shift in position shocked Ukraine and European leaders, who fear the move would allow the Russian army to maintain pressure on Ukrainian front lines.

Over the weekend Zelenskyy and his European allies sought to find common ground with Trump, although Zelenskyy said he would keep pushing for a ceasefire.

Yesterday Trump appeared willing to provide security guarantees for Ukraine after the conflict ends. But Zelenskyy said those guarantees “must really be very practical, delivering protection on land, in the air and at sea, and must be developed with Europe’s participation”.
