Curating Conversations with Cedar Hill Cemetery

In this episode of Curating Conversations, Maggie Powers explores the well-known Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, CT, the institution of slavery in the state of Connecticut, and the free Black Communities of Hartford. Featuring an interview with Beverly Lucas, Director of Cedar Hill Cemetery Foundation, both Lucas and Powers examine CHC’s early history as well as its lack of accessibility to the Black community in Hartford pre-twentieth century. Through asking this critical question, how does the lack of Black people buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery between 1864 and 1911 help us understand some of the structures and conditions that Black Hartfordians had to contend with at the time, Powers begins to facilitate a local conversation of Black consciousness.
