Hitler's Holidays of Hate
When Hitler seized power in 1933, he had one aim in mind – to convince the German people to go to war.
In this episode, a team of experts investigate the methods that Hitler and the Nazi Party used to indoctrinate a peaceful population and turn it into a finely-tuned war machine – from monopolising the airwaves to mechanising the country through use of the ‘people’s car’. We discuss some of the locations that still stand as gruesome reminders of the Nazis’ efforts to control the will of the people, such as the Olympic Park from the 1936 Berlin Olympics and Joseph Goebbels’ Propaganda Ministry. We also explore the colossal crumbling holiday park of Prora, home to the shady ‘Strength Through Joy’ programme, which sought to brainwash people on vacation and on cruise ships, including the Wilhelm Gustloff - the site of the deadliest disaster in maritime history.
