Russian hockey players make up an important part of our hockey culture. They've contributed both to the modern game with players like Alex Ovechkin but also in the development of professional full time hockey players through their hockey programs and leagues based in Russia or the former USSR. The best players though, they always ended up in the NHL. For some of them, it wasn't as easy as just hopping on a plane and coming west. On this episode we talk about the Russia, the invasion of Ukraine the defections of Alexander Mogilny, Sergei Fedorov and Evgeni Malkin and what their experiences might mean for the future of players such as Matvey Michkov.
