Doctor's Mailbag: Juicing vs. Smoothies, Eating For Your Age and More!

The doctor is in and she’s answering your questions! On this episode of The Exam Room podcast, “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll welcomes Dr. Vanita Rahman to the show for a wide ranging nutrition question and answer session as we open the doctor’s mailbag!
    Among the questions answered:
How much fiber is lost in the juicing process compared to making a smoothie? Is it possible that it becomes impossible to lose weight when we get older no matter how clean we eat? How should we change our diet to accommodate our aging bodies in our 60’s and beyond? Why wouldn’t high cholesterol levels improve when eating a plant-based diet? Why would a person gain weight after eating a plant-based diet for years? How can a medical professional incorporate plant-based eating and preventative nutrition into their practice? What are low-fat alternatives to the Beyond Burger? Also, Chuck is joined by Shivani Sathasivam who is leading the way for healthier eating in the Middle East at just 23 years old. She adopted a plant-based diet after enduring unrelenting pain in her knee throughout her teenage years due to a severe injury.
Doctors told Shivani that she would require knee replacement surgery, but after modifying her diet the pain subsided greatly and the surgery was put on hold. Now she’s running full steam ahead pain-free as the leader of Plant-Based Bahrain!

Thyroids and Nutrition: Your Body In Balance

Thyroids and Nutrition: Your Body In Balance

The connection between thyroid health and diet is becoming increasingly clear.
In the second part of the “Your Body In Balance” series with Dr. Neal Barnard and “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll, the pair explore the research available on thyroid function and nutrition.
Dr. Barnard delves into the differences between hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism and the foods to avoid for each condition. He also tackles the effect dietary change can have on Hashimoto’s and Graves’ disease.
Then, Chuck is joined by three people from all different walks of life who overcame their thyroid issues and are featured in the Your Body In Balance book.
Dr. Mike Cowan is a neurosurgeon who enjoyed staying active and competing in sports. Mike thought that he was a pillar of health until one day his bloodwork showed an underperforming thyroid.
Wendy Sax is a film producer who began gaining weight unexpectedly and noticed that her hair was turning brittle. She experienced dramatic mood swings that often left her with feelings of deep depression while also feeling surges of restless energy. It wasn’t long before doctors diagnosed her with a hyperthyroid.
Jeanne Schumacher is a chemistry teacher who also began packing on pounds, but instead of having a jolt of energy, she felt sluggish and was sick all the time. She had become a frequent flyer in the doctor’s office. Her turning point came when she was rushed to the hospital with a 105-degree fever and sky-high blood pressure.
Although they lead much different lives, they do have one thing in common, each are now living vibrantly and healthfully following a closer examination of the foods they were eating.
Their stories of transformation are amazing!
Their stories are just a few of the many featured in Dr. Barnard’s new book, Your Body In Balance, which will be released on February 4.

Healthy Skin, Healthy Hormones: Your Body In Balance

Healthy Skin, Healthy Hormones: Your Body In Balance

If you have been struggling with your skin and battling acne and nothing seems to make it go away, the solution could be getting your hormones back in balance!
As we begin our special series “Your Body In Balance” with Dr. Neal Barnard and “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll the pair are joined by twin sisters Nina and Randa Nelson whose struggle with acne led to bouts of depression and took a toll on both the budding entertainers’ careers. During bad flare ups they would shut themselves inside their home and shut out their friends and the outside world. It seemed as though pimples would plague them their entire lives and that all hope was lost. That is until they changed what their diet.
On this episode, Dr. Barnard explains why our hormones are affected by food and how if what we eat causes them to go haywire, the solution to healthier skin might begin at the table.
Their story is just one of many featured in Dr. Barnard’s new book, Your Body In Balance which will be released February 4.

Fighting Cold and Flu with Food!

Fighting Cold and Flu with Food!

The food that you eat plays an enormous role in how strong our immune system is!
Join “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll and Dr. Jasmol Sardana as they examine how to fight a cold and flu with food! Did you know that the average person in the U.S. will catch a cold two to three times every year and tens of millions of others will come down with the flu?
Find out the best foods to eat to help you stay healthy while everyone around you seems to be coughing and sneezing up a storm on this episode!
Beyond food, Chuck and Dr. Jasmol also discuss the vegan flu shot, Flublok. This vaccine uses no eggs during the creation process and is believed to be the best option for those eating a vegan diet. And if you’re wondering why a person would still need a flu shot if they’re eating a healthy diet, Dr. Jasmol sheds light on that too!

Everything You Need To Know About Going Vegan with Drs. Michael Greger, Neal Barnard, Jasmol Sardana

Everything You Need To Know About Going Vegan with Drs. Michael Greger, Neal Barnard, Jasmol Sardana

Everything you need to know about going vegan you will learn in this show as Drs. Michael Greger, Neal Barnard and Jasmol Sardana join “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room™!
This jam-packed show will help you make this the healthiest year of your life.
Dr. Greger will share how not to diet! At a time when we’re spending billions of dollars every year to lose weight only to get heavier and heavier, Dr. Greger clues us in on where we’re going wrong as he talks about his new book, How Not To Diet. He gives advice on the best and worst time to eat, why gut bacteria is so important for weight loss, and how eating fewer calories without going hungry can extend your life!
Then, Dr. Sardana joins Chuck for Vegan 101 to answer the basic questions like “how do I get started” and “what steps should I take first?” She also helps us discover our “why” for change, which is almost as important as the how when taking charge of our health.
For the advanced course, Chuck revisits a conversation with Dr. Barnard that shatters myths about vegan diets! These are many of the same falsehoods that have prevented people from making the switch — everything from getting enough nutrients to athletic performance. And once all of that has been put to bed, Dr. Barnard reveals the health benefits of eating a plant-based diet that can make this your healthiest year ever.

GreatDaneManiac ,

One of the highlights of my week!

Even though I’ve learned a lot about a vegan WFPB diet, I still keep learning new thing I never knew before. The only thing this podcast needs is more episodes per week!
