Gurdev Singh Rupana (13 April 1936 – 5 December 2021) was a distinguished Punjabi author best known for his evocative short stories that capture the lives of ordinary people. A postgraduate in Punjabi literature and PhD scholar from Delhi University, Rupana began his career as a schoolteacher in Delhi, forging close literary ties with luminaries like Amrita Pritam. His acclaimed collection Aam Khaas (“Ordinary Extraordinary”)—featuring tales of Dalits, migrant laborers, and slum dwellers—earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2020 and recognition as a Dhahan Prize finalist in 2019.
