Beyond The Game with Brandon Barnes

As an athlete, sports are all we know for the most part. Our sport has consumed the greater part of our lives, and time with so many ups and downs. But, it doesn't need to end there. For some, sports are a part of who we are, and then there's many other layers of the person we are becoming because of sports. Outside of the game, who are we? What do we like to do? What are our hobbies? Do we have any other skillset? What do we want out of life? So many questions eventually arise as we grow and get older, realizing one day that our ability to play the game will end. It doesn't mean it's the end of our relationship to the sport, but instead a new chapter begins in our lives. In this episode, Brandon talks about life outside the game, his faith that has been the rock in his life to guide him through the ups and downs, along with his family, and hobbies he has outside the game. He talks about all the 'real' things we eventually begin thinking about as athletes, and that it why this episode is so special. Brandon has been blessed and fortunate enough to have a long career, with many years at the Major League level, but he too knows that it's all been a gift and that there's more to life outside his love for the game. Centerfield Breakdown with Former MLB Outfielder Jerry Owens

Former MLB outfielder with Chicago White Sox, turned coach with the Cleveland Indians, Jerry Owens joins us to share everything he's experienced and learned as an outfielder in his 13 year career. Jerry opens up with an introduction to his background and experience playing pro ball, to his transition from playing to coaching in the Cleveland Indians organization. At the 17:30 mark is where we get to it and begin talking OUTFIELD! JO starts off with the role and responsibilities of a centerfielder. He explains the mentality and preparation required to develop your tools in the outfield and become an elite defender. We discuss becoming a student of the game through studying your opponent, and communication with your outfielders and infielders being vital in working together as one cohesive unit. Next JO talks in great detail about drills and tips for outfielders to do on a daily and weekly basis. These drills he discusses cover everything from; first step, fly ball and ground ball routes, quick release, playing balls off the wall, and pregame. Every drill we discuss, he was not only taught as a player by experienced coaches, but he now implements into his outfielders workouts. During this interview we even discuss the offensive mindset of being a centerfielder, and what it entails. What exactly is the strategy and game plan for a centerfielder? Could be batting leadoff or 9-hole, and the responsibilities that come along with that. Lastly JO talks about base running from a centerfielders perspective. As a 'speedy' guy, what expectations are set, and how do you properly execute them? We dive into footwork with stealing, and what to look for in the field when trying to steal or take that extra base. Additionally Jerry shares with us what the off-season focus should be for a centerfielder, and what skills and attributes coaches are looking for in todays centerfielder. This episode is packed with so much content and value that JO shares with us, I'm really looking forward in hearing the feedback on this one!
