These are the Humans of Non-League. The local heroes who make non-league football happen – the managers, players, officials, volunteers and supporters who prop up the vast cultural phenomenon of football outside the spotlight. Interviewed one on one by Chris Nee.

    This week’s human is a central defender who’s graced some of London’s biggest non-league clubs, and was signed by AFC Bournemouth at the age of 20. Mitchell Nelson is still going strong at Cray Wanderers, where a second successive promotion was on the cards before the 2019/20 season was curtailed.

    This week’s human is a stalwart of his local music scene, a Liberal Democrat councillor, and a dedicated supporter of Kingstonian, his town’s non-league football team. Jon Tolley is Kingston through and through, and has the CV to prove it.

    This week’s human is involved behind the scenes in non-league football, as well as representing players in the women’s game. Jo Kinney is Head of Women’s Football at Ignite Soccer, and Player Liaison at Atherton Collieries of the Northern Premier League.

    Andrzej Perkins

    This week’s human is a third-generation volunteer at one of London’s best loved football clubs. Andrzej Perkins is the long-serving communications manager at Walthamstow, a role that encompasses the matchday programme, working with media, overseeing photography, and looking after the club website.

    Jonathan Fadugba

    This week’s human is a true football polymath. Jonathan Fadugba is a football consultant, scout and analyst with The Guardian’s Football Weekly, FourFourTwo and Football Radar on his CV, along with Just Football, which he established himself as far back as 2007.

    Francis Duku

    This week’s human is a genuine giant of our national sport. Francis Duku is a former Dulwich Hamlet, Maidenhead United, Crawley Town, Bromley and Gravesend & Northfleet player of some repute. Since hanging up his boots, though, he’s become a champion of non-league footballers nationwide as the founder of Our Game.

    Gavin Rose

    This week’s human will be a familiar name to fans of the Isthmian League and beyond. Gavin Rose is the longest serving manager at Dulwich Hamlet, having passed a decade in the job in 2019. A former player with Wimbledon, Charlton Athletic, QPR, Southend United and more, he guided Hamlet to promotion for the first time in 2013, and has been instrumental in the club’s rise back to non-league prominence.

    Rob Hemingway

    This week’s human is a media machine, with writing credits in some massive international titles as well as coverage for a club closer to home. Rob Hemingway is a multilingual, NCTJ-accredited journalist, and a scout with FA Talent ID qualifications. He’s also an advocate for the non-league game and involved on multiple fronts. So let’s get stuck in.

    This week’s human is a multi-talented media professional who’s been able to bring his considerable skills not only into football, but directly into a non-league football club. Seb White is the Media Director at Hampton & Richmond Borough, and is responsible in large part for MUNDIAL, one of the leading titles football culture has to offer.

    Joe Vines

    This week’s human is a genuine legend of the non-league game in and around London. Joe Vines has been celebrated by supporters and team-mates alike throughout his playing career, much of which was played wearing a captain’s armband. He made his name as a tough-tackling defender at a number of clubs, including Cray Valley Paper Mills, Bromley, Crawley Town, Lewes, Tooting & Mitcham United, AFC Wimbledon and Maidstone United – and, of course, at Cray Wanderers, where he’s also been applying his coaching skills as assistant manager.
