Episode 59: Extinguished Countries feat Giovanni Vale

As a long time lover of maps, this conversation was a huge treat! One of my favorites is a globe that I got from my grandfather. It’s not that old, maybe 50 years, but there are still probably a dozen countries on it that don’t exist anymore.  But even though those countries names no longer appear on maps, in many cases what they were continues to exist in the descendants of its citizens for decades if not hundreds of years. Today, we’re speaking with someone who has created an incredible way to remind us that even though borders may move and names might change, all of that history is very much with us today. Giovanni Vale is the founder of the Extinguished Countries project. The first book they’ve produced is The Republic of Venice. Episode 58: Crypto Proof of Waste feat Jackie Sawicky

It’s been 15 years since Bitcoin was created. After around a decade and a half, there’s still not anything really useful to do with it outside of paying for illegal arms and mail order drugs. Even though it’s basically useless, Bitcoin and crypto in general has a made a few people extremely rich. Worldwide, the crypto sector is valued at around $2.5 trillion. History shows that as soon as the extremely rich get together, the rest of us suffer. To talk about some of the ways that Bitcoin mining and cryptomining in general are wrecking things for the rest of us, we’re joined by Jackie Sawicky from the Texas Coalition Against Cryptomining.
