#154 | 1 Samuel: The Anointed King (that nobody knew about)
In this episode, we discuss the intriguing story of Saul’s selection as the first king of Israel, found in 1 Samuel 9-10. The Israelites, longing to be like the nations around them, demanded a king. But they didn’t just want any king—they wanted one who looked the part, someone who would fit the mold of the powerful rulers of their time, many of whom descended from the Nephilim, the giants of old. God's choice of Saul, a man tall and striking in appearance, played into this desire, demonstrating how the people's wishes influenced God's decision. We explore the three crucial stages of someone becoming king in ancient Israel: the anointing, where the chosen one is set apart by God for leadership; the proving, where the anointed king must face and overcome challenges to demonstrate their worthiness; and the coronation, where the king is publicly crowned and affirmed by the people. In this episode, we look at the first stage of anointing, which highlights the transformative work of the Holy Spirit, who equips individuals for the roles they are called to. The Spirit made Saul into a new person, coming upon him and leading him to prophesy at the very place where Israel's most formidable enemy has set up a military post in their land. We discuss how this points to an important truth: that the anointing of the Spirit empowers us to enter into battle and overcome the enemies that are holding us down and holding us back, whether those be internal or external enemies. Finally, we draw a parallel to Jesus Christ the King. Just as Saul received the Spirit of God at his anointing to be Israel’s king, Jesus is anointed at His baptism by the Holy Spirit, and declared to be God’s Son. This declaration of Jesus' Sonship is not just about family, it's also about royalty. We discuss the royal implications of being called God’s sons and daughters, emphasizing that, like Christ, we are anointed to carry out God’s rule and reign on earth.
