For this final episode of Sounds and Style Season 1 Lynette is joined by stylist and editor-in-chief of Interview Magazine, Mel Ottenberg. Recorded at Mel’s legendary apartment in New York City, Mel and Lynette cover some of the many highlights from Mel’s career including his part in the Britney Spears Slave 4 U snake styling moment, turning down work with Prince to style a film that ‘no one’s ever seen’, and his early days skipping school to watch drag shows on acid.  
A suitably fabulous season finale.

Liz Johnson Artur is a Ghanaian-Russian photographer. Born in Bulgaria, raised in Germany and based in London. Liz photographs life as she sees it, from street level. Her loving take on Black life is a celebration of the everyday person when they put themselves together and step out; be that at church, carnival or in the club. Liz’s long career documenting Black life now forms part of her ever evolving Black Balloon archive. Alongside her essential work documenting the lives of the African Diaspora, she has also photographed the likes of Lady Gaga, Jorja Smith, Shygirl, Lee Scratch Perry, and Ms Carrie Stacks. 
In this episode of Sounds & Style, Liz and Lynette discuss Liz’s habit for meeting her musical idols including Don Cherry and KRS-One, as well as the similarities between her career and that of musician and muse, Asha Puthli, both of whom had their creative potential awoke on formative visits to New York City.

Musician and Actress Lily Allen came to fame in a pre-social media age, at a time when she was largely left to her own devices when it came to style and beauty decisions. This freedom led to iconic looks from the then-pop star who created her own style inspired by her friends, family and thrift stores in her hometown of London. 
Today she’s based in New York and in this episode of Sounds & Style she reflects on her time as Karl Lagerfeld’s muse, the exclusive and exclusionary nature of the fashion business, and her love of high/low styling. 
Lily and Lynette discuss the formative music and style influences of legendary Manchester club The Hacienda, Mike Skinner’s The Streets, Amy Winehouse’s authentic styling, and feminist punk band The Slits.

Costume designer Heidi Bivens is probably best known for her essential contribution to the characterisation and storytelling in Euphoria. In this seminal TV series Heidi’s costumes relay the details and personalities of each of the iconic characters. Heidi’s breakout role as costume designer was in David Lynch’s Inland Empire. She’s gone on to work with Harmony Korine in Spring Breakers and Beach Bum created costumes for Jonah Hill’s Mid90s.  
In this episode of Sounds & Style Heidi and Lynette talk about their early fashion education from cult magazines; Heidi’s musical awakening with Bikini Kill and the Riot Grrrl movement; and life and style in 1990s New York City.

International hair stylist Jawara joins Lynette this week to talk about his life in music and style. Jawara grew up between Jamaica and New York in the 1990s and 2000s, in a family at the heart of Jamaican reggae and dancehall culture. Today Jawara works for every major fashion magazine, and has worked with the likes of Rihanna, Beyonce and Diana Ross. 
The influence of Jamaica, and Jamaican culture runs heavy in this episode. Jawara’s first track is Beenie Man’s Memories, which takes our guest back to joyful moments in his childhood, and is still called upon today to instill some “Jamaican confidence” ahead of a big show. 
Next up the pair discuss Liberation for Africa, by his Mother - Sister Carol, who was pregnant with Jawara when she recorded it. Jawara and Lynette discuss his upbringing in hair salons and community spaces in New York and Jamaica when Dancehall was crossing over in the mainstream. This moment in Black hair and Black style had a huge impact on him and his career. 
Jawara’s final song choice is Mary J.Blige’s album My Life from 1994, which Jawara credits as being the sound of black culture in New York at that time, and still informs his styling decisions to this day.

Martine Rose is the perfect guest to launch Sounds and Style with. The work of the seminal British menswear designer is inextricably linked with her formative years on dancefloors and living rooms listening to her older cousin’s acid house tapes, pirate radio with her big sister, and her grandparents’ records. 
In this episode Martine and Lynette talk about Martine’s early childhood memories at her grandparent’s home where her grandad would play John Holt’s One Hundred Vaults of Holt after church as well as witty calypso songs by Pluto Shervington and Lord Kitchener. The pair reflect on the continued impact of Martine’s family in shaping her music and wider tastes. Hear Martine and Lynette get a bit emotional thinking about Frankie Knuckles’ Tears which, for Martine felt like a portal into the wider world; dancefloors, and togetherness beckoned. Goldie’s Timeless, Martine’s final selection, takes Martine back to her late teens working on a trading estate and taking life from Goldie’s masterpiece that lives in the cassette player of her purple beetle.
