    Historia de la justiciera y el arcángel en el palacio de las pecadoras, de Eduardo Galeano

    Eduardo Galeano nació en Uruguay y vivió exiliado en Argentina y España, después de que fuera encarcelado y añadido a la lista de los condenados por Videla durante las dictadoras militares del sur del continente en la década de los 70’s. Sus trabajos trascienden géneros ortodoxos. Su cuento epistolar “Historia de la justiciera y el arcángel en el palacio de las pecadoras” forma parte de su libro Las Palabras Andantes. El primer actor, Erando Gonzáles, beneficiario del programa compañía nacional de teatro del FONCA (sistema de apoyos a la creación y a proyectos culturales), dará voz y vida al autor en esta carta.     Theft, by Katherine Anne Porter

    Marjorie Burren reads “Theft,” by Katherine Anne Porter. Texas-born journalist and author Porter may be best known for her 1962 best-selling novel Ship of Fools, but her reputation today rests on her short stories. “Theft,” first published in the literary quarterly The Gyroscope in 1929, features an unnamed female protagonist in New York City, and is plainly autobiographical. The story is about loss, and the “theft” of the title is not confined merely to money and material goods, but also to the loss of hope, trust, and self-respect. Music: “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” Sonny Rollins. Directed by Fredric Dannen.

    Dr. H. A. Moynihan, de Lucía Berlín

    Con su inigualable toque de humor y melancolía, Lucía Berlín hace eco de su vida, asombrosa y convulsa, con relatos tan reales que parecen fotografías en movimiento. Sus personajes luchan como ella por sobrevivir en un mundo donde no han elegido nada. Las mujeres de sus relatos están desorientadas, pero al mismo tiempo son fuertes e inteligentes.     The Swimmer, by John Cheever

    Richard Fink reads John Cheever’s “The Swimmer,” a modern myth that surely stands as one of the greatest works of short fiction by an American writer. Fancying himself an explorer and “man with a destiny,” Ned Merrill decides to make the eight-mile journey to his Westchester home via an imaginary river — the swimming pools of his friends and neighbors. But the journey turns surreal as the day stretches out into the passages of Merrill’s life, bringing autumnal darkness, the fatigue of age, and the protagonist’s sense of his own emptiness and isolation. Music: “Islands,” Philip Glass. Directed by Fredric Dannen.

    Un Señor Muy Viejo con unas Alas Enormes, de Gabriel García Márquez

    Gabriel García Márquez, Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1982, fue un escritor colombiano que alcanzó notoriedad mundial con la publicación de su novela Cien años de soledad. Como autor de ficción, García Márquez es siempre asociado con el realismo mágico, considerado figura central de este género, que utiliza la yuxtaposición de la fantasía y el mito con las actividades ordinarias. En su cuento “Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes”, los conceptos de apariencia y superficialidad están fuertemente recalcados, así como los conceptos de fe, incredulidad, desencanto y oportunismo. El actor Erik Zavala dará voz a este fantástico relato. Música: “The Waltz of the Monsters” y “Cleo on the Trapeze” de Yann Tiersen. Dirigida por Marcela Brondo.

    The Lady with the Little Dog, by Anton Chekhov

    Henrietta Weekes reads Anton Chekhov’s “The Lady with the Little Dog.” While vacationing in Yalta, the cynical, philandering Dmitri Gurov meets and seduces Anna Sergeevna, a young woman, who, like Gurov, is unhappily married. Their love affair, intended to be a brief encounter, proves to be anything but, and takes the two of them by surprise. Chekhov’s simple yet powerful depiction of forbidden yet ineluctable love is ranked among his best fiction. Music: “Andante cantabile,” from String Quartet No 1 in D, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Directed by Fredric Dannen.

    Lección de Cocina, de Rosario Castellanos

    Rosario Castellanos fue una de las principales escritoras del siglo XX mexicano y del llamado Boom Latinoamericano. Autora de una vasta obra narrativa, dramática y poética, es conocida principalmente por sus novelas de tinte indigenista. A Castellanos le preocupaban varios temas desde la perspectiva feminista, como la poca presencia y reconocimiento de las mujeres en el ámbito cultural. Lección de cocina forma parte de su serie de relatos urbanos Álbum de familia, en el que trata ambientes urbanos donde la situación de las mujeres es especialmente importante. La actriz Daniela Contreras interpreta esta pieza. Música: “Return to Earth,” de Meredith Monk. Dirigida por Marcela Brondo.

    An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by Ambrose Bierce

    William Slusser reads Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” one of the most famous short stories in American literature. Bierce’s Civil War tale, originally published in 1890 in the San Francisco Examiner, has an oft-imitated spooky twist ending; the story was even presented as an episode of The Twilight Zone. Narrator Bill Slusser is himself the author of the Civil War-themed play John Brown’s Body, presented in 2018 at the San Miguel Playhouse. Music: “Marche au Supplice,” Hector Berlioz. Directed by Fredric Dannen.

    La Tía Daniela, de Angeles Mastretta

    Angeles Mastretta es una escritora y periodista mexicana, conocida por crear personajes femeninos sugerentes y ficciones que reflejan las realidades sociales y políticas de México. Cuando su hija menor, Catalina, enfermó inesperadamente, Mastretta se sentó cerca de la pequeña en el hospital y comenzó a contarle historias de mujeres interesantes y diferentes de la familia, que fueron importantes en momentos críticos de su vida. La tía Daniela forma parte de este conjunto de relatos y es interpretado por la actriz Josefina Valentini. Música: “Gnossienne #5,” de Erik Satie. Dirigida por Marcela Brondo.

    Miriam, by Truman Capote

    Phoebe Greyson reads Truman Capote’s “Miriam,” the 1945 short story that first brought Capote to the attention of the literary world. This dreamlike tale of a lonely widow in New York City, and the eerily intelligent young girl she meets, won an O. Henry Award. The title may refer either to the widow or the girl, who are both named Miriam – and perhaps only one of them actually exists. You decide. Music: “Walking Distance,” by Bernard Herrmann. Directed by Fredric Dannen.

    Interview: Jennifer Clement

    Jennifer Clement is a poet and novelist whose books have been translated into 30 languages, and the first woman president of PEN International. She lives in Mexico City. In this exclusive interview with SMA Podcast, Clement talks about her novel Prayers for the Stolen; her memoir Widow Basquiat (chosen by NPR as the best book of 2014); her human rights activism (she led a successful campaign in Mexico to make it a federal crime to murder a journalist, and has been a forceful advocate for women’s rights and free expression); and the special alchemy that a poet brings to the art of novel writing; among other topics. This interview took place on July 3, 2020, at the San Miguel Playhouse. It was conducted by Fredric Dannen and recorded by Gerardo Charreton. Doug Robinson provided the theme music.
