Eduardo Galeano nació en Uruguay y vivió exiliado en Argentina y España, después de que fuera encarcelado y añadido a la lista de los condenados por Videla durante las dictadoras militares del sur del continente en la década de los 70’s. Sus trabajos trascienden géneros ortodoxos. Su cuento epistolar “Historia de la justiciera y el arcángel en el palacio de las pecadoras” forma parte de su libro Las Palabras Andantes. El primer actor, Erando Gonzáles, beneficiario del programa compañía nacional de teatro del FONCA (sistema de apoyos a la creación y a proyectos culturales), dará voz y vida al autor en esta carta.

Marjorie Burren reads “Theft,” by Katherine Anne Porter. Texas-born journalist and author Porter may be best known for her 1962 best-selling novel Ship of Fools, but her reputation today rests on her short stories. “Theft,” first published in the literary quarterly The Gyroscope in 1929, features an unnamed female protagonist in New York City, and is plainly autobiographical. The story is about loss, and the “theft” of the title is not confined merely to money and material goods, but also to the loss of hope, trust, and self-respect.

Richard Fink reads John Cheever’s “The Swimmer,” a modern myth that surely stands as one of the greatest works of short fiction by an American writer. Fancying himself an explorer and “man with a destiny,” Ned Merrill decides to make the eight-mile journey to his Westchester home via an imaginary river — the swimming pools of his friends and neighbors. But the journey turns surreal as the day stretches out into the passages of Merrill’s life, bringing autumnal darkness, the fatigue of age, and the protagonist’s sense of his own emptiness and isolation.

Gabriel García Márquez, Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1982, fue un escritor colombiano que alcanzó notoriedad mundial con la publicación de su novela Cien años de soledad. Como autor de ficción, García Márquez es siempre asociado con el realismo mágico, considerado figura central de este género, que utiliza la yuxtaposición de la fantasía y el mito con las actividades ordinarias. En su cuento “Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes”, los conceptos de apariencia y superficialidad están fuertemente recalcados, así como los conceptos de fe, incredulidad, desencanto y oportunismo. El actor Erik Zavala dará voz a este fantástico relato.

Henrietta Weekes reads Anton Chekhov’s “The Lady with the Little Dog.” While vacationing in Yalta, the cynical, philandering Dmitri Gurov meets and seduces Anna Sergeevna, a young woman, who, like Gurov, is unhappily married. Their love affair, intended to be a brief encounter, proves to be anything but, and takes the two of them by surprise. Chekhov’s simple yet powerful depiction of forbidden yet ineluctable love is ranked among his best fiction.
