Wisdom from a Female Tech CEO: Emily Coleman

Wisdom of Women

In this episode, we had a great conversation with Emily Coleman, a successful entrepreneur and co-founder of HAI Analytics. Emily's journey has led her to confront obstacles, defy norms in a male-dominated sector, and believe in herself even when others didn't. Together, we're exploring mentorship, entrepreneurship, gender parity in salary negotiation, and the high stakes world of college enrollment.

Emily is not only an accomplished professional, but also a mother navigating work-life balance and preparing for the emotional toll of sending a child off to college. She's an advocate for harnessing natural joy, recognizing personal strengths, and developing an authentic leadership style, especially for young women facing barriers in male-dominated industries.

Whether you're a parent preparing to send your child to college or a young woman trying to make it in a challenging field, this is one conversation you don't want to miss. This is an enlightening chat about the power of believing in oneself, the importance of mentorship, and challenging preconceptions about college enrollment.

Guest Bio:

A social psychologist by training, Emily has always been interested the factors that shape our beliefs and behaviors. In graduate school, Emily was particularly interested in the behavioral effects of social comparison and “the impostor phenomenon’, first described by psychologists in 1978. After completing graduate school, Emily began working for the enrollment management office at Syracuse University, using her statistical background to build models to predict enrollment, retention, and success. While at Syracuse, Emily was lucky enough to see a presentation by Linda Babcock, one of the authors of “Women Don’t Ask”. Although not directly related to the work she was doing, this inspired Emily to find ways to help other women around her succeed.

Emily has worked in enrollment management for her entire career. In 2018, Emily and a colleague decided to found their own higher education consulting company, HAI Analytics. Emily and her co-founder are proud of the women-owned and operated company they have built, in a male-dominated field, and continue to look for ways to empower other women to take risks, ask for what they want, and build the career that works best for them.

Emily earned a PhD in social and personality psychology with a concentration in statistics from Cornell University, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philosophy from Boston College.
