Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the excellent actor and long overdue guest ANDREW ELLIS! Long overdue in many ways, but directly as Pip gradually ticks off the cast of the This Is England on his database... Also of course, as mentioned in this episode, with Stephen Graham being the spiritual godfather of this podcast, it all makes infinite sense. Andrew has been putting in the work over the years and has kind of grown up on both sides of the camera, with a perfect loop of life feeding the art and art feeding life in a balance that has taken a while to achieve. So it's great to hear things are in a nice spot, as well hearing about the past dalliances with podcasting (Overrated Everything), parent life, the said importance of living a life off screen, and his many roles stemming from Gadget in This Is England. He has a bunch of work in the pipeline, including 'The Walk-In' (mentioned in the episode - in case you heard it as "the walking"!), so keep an eye open for all those - but in the meantime, enjoy the present, as Andrew joins in the fun. We catch up with Poppy hot on the heels of a returning pet cat, and go straight into the very strange world of the chatroom areas of the internet and how they almost instantly elevate to sex talk, her many varied podcasts, finding comedy through early animation work, the adoption of a brainscanner for the new podcast, sections of society that are either chill or just weird, and bringing out and/or celebrating the gross. Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 325 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! We are still in lockdown (lockdown has been lifted), and while we’re all going in to work (no going into work) and staying alert (SO much more alert than usual), Pip decided to round up a willing crew for some further drunk antics by way of the second ISOLATION DRUNKCAST! This one right here is the Back To The Future / Godfather / Karate Kid of podcasts. A three parter of crazy huge proportions, featuring not only Pip and the usual Hardcore Listing crew Stu and Chris, but also the truly great comedians / Off Menu duo of JAMES ACASTER and ED GAMBLE! A heavy affair combining all manner of drink combos, raised voices and flaring tempers all conducted over zoom through five mini computer screens. It actually didn’t stray too far outside the realms of decency, this one, and while it’s absolutely not radio friendly, you’ll most certainly enjoy this one like you surely did the previous Isolation Drunkcast! So, as always, pour yourself a Scroobius (or a protein shake), set yourself a lil’ blanket fort or some such, and enjoy the following four hours of true mayhem. HAVE FUN! You were cordially welcomed of course on New Year’s Day, but this feels like the first kind of ‘official’ episode of the decade. We all at Distraction Pieces Heights wish you nothing but the very best for the year ahead. Now let’s get it off to a proper start with the first guest of the year - it’s the uniquely great KARL PILKINGTON! While some see Karl as the grumpy one of the original podcast trio consisting of him, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, as you will hear in this podcast right here - it wasn’t necessarily grumpiness. Nor was it disinterest. Karl was looking through the world through a different prism, and certainly a prism of which we should all have a go at experiencing. It’s really nice hearing him get around ideas at leisure and with Pip (and us) as a sounding board, and definitely a really cool way of sharing the worldview of one of the more fascinating characters in the cast of podcasts, series and media in general. The two get into it all, from the origins of podcasting (kind of beginning with the Gervais one of course), to his thoughts on the promo run, to confidence, last minute tinkering, being a fan of real life and the fine line between that and comedy, ponderings on having children, the XFM days, being rubbed the wrong way by Ricky, his genuine curiosity, working on Derek, people being over familiar and a charming spider story to round it off. Brilliant. Enjoy!
