▸ Wall Street stocks buoyed by Trump nomination to vacancy at Fed ▸ European defence stocks sell off amid hopes of Ukraine peace agreement ▸ US government debt dumped by investors after weak Treasury auctions Wall Street stocks rose yesterday as investors bet that President Donald Trump's nomination of Stephen Miran to a vacancy at the central bank would boost the case for interest rate cuts. The blue-chip S&P 500 index was up 0.8 per cent by early afternoon in New York. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite had gained 0.9 per cent. Wall Street was buoyed by hopes of a more dovish US Federal Reserve after Trump said on Thursday that he will nominate Council of Economic Advisers chair Miran to fill the vacant governor role following Adriana Kugler's resignation last week. Miran is a critic of Fed chair Jay Powell and an ally of the president, who has repeatedly called for rate cuts and attacked Powell. “Given Miran's track record of being critical of the Fed, we would expect to see at least a third dissent as soon as September if the Fed doesn't cut [interest rates],” Bank of America analysts wrote. buoyed The stock market was buoyed by strong economic data.(强劲的经济数据提振了股市。) The central bank adopted a dovish stance to support economic growth.(央行采取鸽派立场以支持经济增长。) The two countries have been close allies for decades.(这两个国家几十年来一直是亲密盟友。) There was dissent within the party over the new policy.(党内对新政策存在异议。)Several members dissented from the majority decision.(几名成员对多数决定表示反对。)

The Trump administration yesterday moved to quell turmoil in the US gold market after the surprise imposition of tariffs on imports of 1kg and 100-ounce bars sent gold futures to a record high. In a move that analysts and investors warned could redraw global trade in gold if it were not reversed, the US Customs and Border Protection agency had earlier ruled that the bars should be subject to duties, dashing expectations they would be exempt. Gold traders, banks and refineries rushed yesterday to respond to the levy, the first on bullion ever imposed by the US. The metal is usually excluded from tariffs because of its role in the financial system. The White House said in an April factsheet that gold would be exempt from its sweeping levies. The step by the CBP, first reported by the Financial Times, was a particular blow to Switzerland, the world’s biggest exporter of the metal. Its relations with Washington had already deteriorated last week after the US unveiled a 39 per cent duty on imports from the country. US gold futures rose to a new intraday record of $3,534 per troy ounce, while London prices remained flat.  quell turmoil The government sent troops to quell the turmoil in the capital.(政府派兵平息首都的动荡。) Several refineries were shut down due to maintenance.(几家炼油厂因检修而停工。)
