▸ Wall Street boosted by strong earnings and Apple investment announcement

▸ Dollar slides as traders increase bets on Fed interest rate cuts

▸ Treasury and UK gilt yields rise as investors offload the debt

Wall Street stocks were boosted yesterday by strong corporate earnings and an investment announcement from Apple as investors shrugged off renewed US tariff announcements from President Donald Trump.

Trump issued an executive order slapping an additional 25 per cent tariff on India, which he said was in response to New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil.

When the levies take effect, many Indian goods will face a total 50 per cent tax on entering the US.

Nevertheless, a string of upbeat announcements from US companies buoyed the stock market.

The blue-chip S&P 500 index was 0.7 per cent higher by early afternoon in New York and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite was up 1 per cent.

Shares in Apple rose 5.8 per cent after the White House announced that the company would invest $100bn in US factories as the company relocates manufacturing to avoid import tariffs.

McDonald's shares rose 2.6 per cent after sales smashed past analysts' expectations.

The dollar fell as investors increased bets on rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve, slipping 0.4 per cent against a basket of other major currencies.
