Don­ald Trump launched a new era of trade rivalry yes­ter­day, with a wave of tar­iffs tak­ing effect at one minute past mid­night in Wash­ing­ton that pushed US import duties to their highest levels in a cen­tury.

The tar­iff increases were imple­men­ted des­pite frantic lob­by­ing by for­eign cap­it­als to escape the levies. Swiss Pres­id­ent Karin Keller-Sut­ter flew home from Wash­ing­ton empty-handed, while Taiwan, a cru­cial chips exporter, also failed to cut its tar­iff rate.

The US pres­id­ent boas­ted that bil­lions of dol­lars from coun­tries that had taken advant­age of the US, “laugh­ing all the way”, would flow into the eco­nomy. Experts talked of the start of a new era. “We are in a new world. Even to trade nerds . . . this is just bonkers,” said one.

rivalry
