▸ Wall Street stocks buoyed by Trump nomination to vacancy at Fed
▸ European defence stocks sell off amid hopes of Ukraine peace agreement
▸ US government debt dumped by investors after weak Treasury auctions
Wall Street stocks rose yesterday as investors bet that President Donald Trump's nomination of Stephen Miran to a vacancy at the central bank would boost the case for interest rate cuts.
The blue-chip S&P 500 index was up 0.8 per cent by early afternoon in New York. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite had gained 0.9 per cent.
Wall Street was buoyed by hopes of a more dovish US Federal Reserve after Trump said on Thursday that he will nominate Council of Economic Advisers chair Miran to fill the vacant governor role following Adriana Kugler's resignation last week.
Miran is a critic of Fed chair Jay Powell and an ally of the president, who has repeatedly called for rate cuts and attacked Powell.
“Given Miran's track record of being critical of the Fed, we would expect to see at least a third dissent as soon as September if the Fed doesn't cut [interest rates],” Bank of America analysts wrote.
