Blackstone lauds restored ‘confidence’
Blackstone president Jonathan Gray said Donald Trump’s recent trade deals and sweeping tax cuts have fuelled a “restoration of confidence” in US financial assets, just months after the president’s trade wars threatened to tip the world’s largest economy into recession.
Deals with Britain, Japan and Indonesia, as well as tax changes favourable to corporations and wealthy individuals, have removed investor uncertainty and added to excitement about opportunities in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure spending, Gray said.
“There has been a restoration of confidence in terms of US assets and just the continued growth in earnings of US companies,” said Gray in an interview with the Financial Times.
“There’s more clarity on tariff negotiations, the strength in US equity markets, and the fact that the ‘899’ matter got resolved successfully,” he added.
Trump dropped a “revenge tax” on international investors in US assets, which had been contained in section 899 of the initial version of his tax bill and sparked alarm on Wall Street.
Gray expected the renewed enthusiasm for US assets to fuel a broad capital markets recovery later this year, with initial public offering and corporate takeover activity accelerating significantly through the autumn.
“We’re feeling pretty positive about what’s going to happen post-Labor Day [September 1] due to the combination of equity markets recovering and debt markets recovering as people feel more confident about where the tariffs will ultimately settle,” he said.
Blackstone is preparing to take a number of its large portfolio companies public, and its lending operations have had a 50 per cent surge in demand this year from clients looking to finance takeovers, Gray added.
