Black­stone lauds restored ‘con­fid­ence’

Black­stone pres­id­ent Jonathan Gray said Don­ald Trump’s recent trade deals and sweep­ing tax cuts have fuelled a “res­tor­a­tion of con­fid­ence” in US fin­an­cial assets, just months after the pres­id­ent’s trade wars threatened to tip the world’s largest eco­nomy into reces­sion.

Deals with Bri­tain, Japan and Indone­sia, as well as tax changes favour­able to cor­por­a­tions and wealthy indi­vidu­als, have removed investor uncer­tainty and added to excite­ment about oppor­tun­it­ies in arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence and digital infra­struc­ture spend­ing, Gray said.

“There has been a res­tor­a­tion of con­fid­ence in terms of US assets and just the con­tin­ued growth in earn­ings of US com­pan­ies,” said Gray in an inter­view with the Fin­an­cial Times.

“There’s more clar­ity on tar­iff nego­ti­ations, the strength in US equity mar­kets, and the fact that the ‘899’ mat­ter got resolved suc­cess­fully,” he added.

Trump dropped a “revenge tax” on inter­na­tional investors in US assets, which had been con­tained in sec­tion 899 of the ini­tial ver­sion of his tax bill and sparked alarm on Wall Street.

Gray expec­ted the renewed enthu­si­asm for US assets to fuel a broad cap­ital mar­kets recov­ery later this year, with ini­tial pub­lic offer­ing and cor­por­ate takeover activ­ity accel­er­at­ing sig­ni­fic­antly through the autumn.

“We’re feel­ing pretty pos­it­ive about what’s going to hap­pen post-Labor Day [Septem­ber 1] due to the com­bin­a­tion of equity mar­kets recov­er­ing and debt mar­kets recov­er­ing as people feel more con­fid­ent about where the tar­iffs will ulti­mately settle,” he said.

Black­stone is pre­par­ing to take a num­ber of its large port­fo­lio com­pan­ies pub­lic, and its lend­ing oper­a­tions have had a 50 per cent surge in demand this year from cli­ents look­ing to fin­ance takeovers, Gray added.
