The Federal Reserve held rates steady yesterday despite pressure from Donald Trump and signs of a cooling economy. Two Fed governors voted against the US central bank’s rate-setting decision for the first time since 1993, as it held borrowing costs at 4.25 to 4.5 per cent.
The Fed decision came hours after second-quarter GDP data pointed to a slowdown, even as it beat economists’ expectations and bounced back from a first-quarter contraction.
In its policy statement, the central bank said it opted to hold rates, citing a “solid” labour market and “somewhat elevated” inflation. While the votes against the decision by Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman were the biggest dissent on rates by Fed governors for over three decades, two members of the broader Federal Open Market Committee opposed the majority in a vote in 2019.
Fed chair Jay Powell acknowledged there had been a “moderation in growth” in the first half of the year. “Focusing on the first half of the year helps smooth through the volatility in the quarterly figures related to the unusual swings in net exports,” said Powell at a press conference. “The moderation in growth largely reflects a slowdown in consumer spending.”
