Microsoft hit $4tn in market capitalisation yesterday in a US tech share surge that also pushed Meta’s stock up 12 per cent, on the back of blockbuster earnings from both groups the day before.

The Nasdaq Composite rose as much as 1.6 per cent to a record high after the opening bell, before paring its gains to about 1 per cent by early afternoon.

The blue-chip S&P 500 index was 0.6 per cent higher, despite a hawkish Federal Reserve meeting that had left the index more downbeat on Wednesday.

The runaway earnings from Microsoft and Meta have allowed investors to shrug off worries over US growth and warnings of a stock market bubble. The two companies are now worth a combined $5.9tn, about twice as much as the entire FTSE 100.

Microsoft rose as much at 9 per cent in early trading, becoming the second group to hit the $4tn milestone after Nvidia this month. Since the chipmaker passed the mark on July 9, its value has risen $400bn more. The rise in Microsoft shares later eased to 4.5 per cent.

US tech stocks that have long dominated Wall Street lost some of their shine in the first quarter after China’s DeepSeek stunned the market with its cut-price artificial intelligence service.
