His romantic misadventures, once whispered among nobles and even echoed in The Tale of Genji, serve here not as mere anecdotes but as a way to conjure a vanished world: one in which even longing had rules. Through these early digressions, Tanizaki does more than offer historical background—he builds an atmosphere. We are introduced to a world of aristocratic elegance and emotional restraint, where passion plays out in glances, gestures, and unanswered letters. Beneath the beauty, there is political calculation; behind the poetry, an ache that cannot be named. This is a slow and dignified beginning—what Zeami would call the jo (序), or prelude, in Noh theater. But within the silences of this courtly overture lies the deep emotional undercurrent that will guide the tale. Tanizaki’s prose—refined, spare, and resonant like Noh—transforms longing into literary grace. This is not analysis, but a quiet offering: an invitation to step into stillness, and listen.

    谷崎潤一郎『少将滋幹の母』を読む前に : 母への慕情、最も美しい母恋の物語

    Transcript ある作品が、自分の心の奥に何かを灯しつづけてくれることがあります。 谷崎潤一郎の『少将滋幹の母』、これは私にとって、そのような作品のひとつです。 この作品は、母を恋い慕う心―― それも、言葉にならず、触れることもできず、 ただ遠くから、静かに、深く、見つめ続けるその感情を、 これほどまでに美しく、昇華して描いた日本文学を、私は他に知りません。 谷崎潤一郎は、耽美、退廃、官能、フェティッシュといったイメージで語られることの多い作家です。 (私の朗読、彼の耽美で官能的な短編『刺青』はiTunesとyoutubeで公開中です。) けれど『少将滋幹の母』は、まったく異なる雰囲気をもつ作品です。 語られるのは欲望ではありません。 触れられない愛と語られない記憶。 そして、いちども真正面から「母」として抱きしめられることのなかった存在への、 一生にわたるまなざしです。 舞台は平安時代。 主人公・滋幹（しげもと）は、五歳の頃に母を政治の力によって奪われます。 母は沈黙し、父は無力で、 そのまま滋幹は大人になり―― 日記のなかに、ただひとつ、母の面影を記し続けます。 母との邂逅で表されたのは、…いえ、これは物語のクライマックスなので楽しみの為に説明はやめておきます。何度読んでも、その素晴らしさは毎回、感じれるものですが…。 ともかくも、母の姿は最後まで明確に描かれません。 けれど、だからこそ、読者のなかに現れてきます。 滋幹の見たであろう母の姿が、 読者の心それぞれに、立ち現れてきます…。 そして、この作品の魅力は―― 文章の完成度の高さにもあります。 『源氏物語』などの格調高い文体を写しながらも、 どこか現代の感性にふれる透明さがあり、 余白、香り、語られない情念が、まるでお能、能楽のように響いてきます。 朗読では、ひとつひとつの文章を、時間をかけて丁寧にお届けしていきます。 静かな時間を必要とする方に、 記憶のなかにある母の姿に、思いを寄せたい方に―― 谷崎潤一郎のもっとも静謐で、もっとも美しい祈りにも似た作品。 『少将滋幹の母』、どうぞお楽しみに。

    Part 26 　二日、宮の大饗はとまりて、臨時客東面とり払ひて、例のごとしたり。上達部は、傅大納言、右大将、中宮大夫、四条大納言、権中納言、侍従の中納言、左衛門督、有国の宰相、大蔵卿、左兵衛督、源宰相、向かひつつゐたまへり。源中納言、右衛門督、左右の宰相の中将は長押の下に、殿上人の座の上に着きたまへり。 　若宮抱き出でたてまつりたまひて、例のことども言はせたてまつり、うつくしみきこえたまひて、上に、 　「いと宮抱きたてまつらむ。」 と、殿ののたまふを、いとねたきことにしたまひて、 　「ああ。」 とさいなむを、うつくしがりきこえたまひて、申したまへば、右大将など興じきこえたまふ。 　上に参りたまひて、主上、殿上に出でさせたまひて、御遊びありけり。殿、例の酔はせたまへり。わづらはしと思ひて、かくろへゐたるに、 　「なぞ、御父の御前の御遊びに召しつるに、さぶらはで急ぎまかでにける。ひがみたり。」 など、むつからせたまふ。 　「許さるばかり歌一つつかうまつれ。親の代はりに。初子の日なり。詠め詠め。」 とせめさせたまふ。うち出でむに、いとかたはならむ。こよなからぬ御酔ひなめれば、いとど御色合ひきよげに、火影はなやかにあらまほしくて、 　「年ごろ、宮のすさまじげにて、一所おはしますを、さうざうしく見たてまつりしに、かくむつかしきまで、左右に見たてまつるこそうれしけれ。」 と、大殿籠もりたる宮たちを、ひき開けつつ見たてまつりたまふ。 　「野辺に小松のなかりせば」 とうち誦じたまふ。新しからむことよりも折節の人の御ありさま、めでたくおぼえさせたまふ。 　またの日、夕つ方、いつしかと霞みたる空を、造り続けたる軒のひまなさにて、ただ渡殿の上のほどをほのかに見て、中務の乳母と昨夜の御口ずさびをめできこゆ。この命婦こそものの心得て、かとかどしくははべる人なれ。 The Prime Minister took the younger Prince in his arms and the King embraced him lovingly, saying, "Long life and health" as usual. The Lord Prime Minister replied, "I will uphold the younger Prince in my arms"; but at that His Augustness the Crown Prince became jealous and begged [to be taken up too], saying, "Ah! Ah!" The Prime Minister was much pleased, and the General of the Right Bodyguard and others were amused by it. The Lord Prime Minister had an audience with the King and they came out together to find amusement. The Minister was much intoxicated. "Troublesome!" I thought, and hid myself away, but I was found. "You are summoned by the father of the Queen, yet you retire so early! Suspicious person!" said he. "Now, instead of the Queen's father it is you who must compose a poem! It is quite an ordinary occasion, so don't hesitate!" He urged, but it seemed to me very awkward to make one only to have it laughed at. As he was very much in liquor, his face was flushed and flamed out in the torchlight. He said, "The Queen had lived for years alone and solitary. I had seen it with anxiety. It is cheering to behold troublesome children on either side of her." And he went to look at the Princes, who had been put to bed, taking off the bedclothes. He was singing: "If there be no little pines in the field
How shall I find the symbol of 1000 ages?" People thought it more suitable that he should sing this old song than make a new one. The next evening the sky was hazy; as the different parts of the palace are built compactly in close rows I could only catch a slight glimpse of it from the veranda. I admired his recitation of last evening with the nurse Madam Nakadaka. This lady is of deep thought and learning.

    二十三 　月が変ってから寒さがだいぶ緩んだ。官吏の増俸問題につれて必然起るべく、多数の噂に上った局員課員の淘汰も、月末までにほぼ片づいた。その間ぽつりぽつりと首を斬られる知人や未知人の名前を絶えず耳にした宗助は、時々家へ帰って御米に、 「今度はおれの番かも知れない」と云う事があった。御米はそれを冗談とも聞き、また本気とも聞いた。まれには隠れた未来を故意に呼び出す不吉な言葉とも解釈した。それを口にする宗助の胸の中にも、御米と同じような雲が去来した。 　月が改って、役所の動揺もこれで一段落だと沙汰せられた時、宗助は生き残った自分の運命を顧りみて、当然のようにも思った。また偶然のようにも思った。立ちながら、御米を見下して、 「まあ助かった」とむずかし気に云った。その嬉しくも悲しくもない様子が、御米には天から落ちた滑稽に見えた。 　また二三日して宗助の月給が五円昇った。 「原則通り二割五分増さないでも仕方があるまい。休められた人も、元給のままでいる人もたくさんあるんだから」と云った宗助は、この五円に自己以上の価値をもたらし帰ったごとく満足の色を見せた。御米は無論の事心のうちに不足を訴えるべき余地を見出さなかった。 　翌日の晩宗助はわが膳の上に頭つきの魚の、尾を皿の外に躍らす態を眺めた。小豆の色に染まった飯の香を嗅いだ。御米はわざわざ清をやって、坂井の家に引き移った小六を招いた。小六は、 「やあ御馳走だなあ」と云って勝手から入って来た。 　梅がちらほらと眼に入るようになった。早いのはすでに色を失なって散りかけた。雨は煙るように降り始めた。それが霽れて、日に蒸されるとき、地面からも、屋根からも、春の記憶を新にすべき湿気がむらむらと立ち上った。背戸に干した雨傘に、小犬がじゃれかかって、蛇の目の色がきらきらする所に陽炎が燃えるごとく長閑に思われる日もあった。 「ようやく冬が過ぎたようね。あなた今度の土曜に佐伯の叔母さんのところへ回って、小六さんの事をきめていらっしゃいよ。あんまりいつまでも放っておくと、また安さんが忘れてしまうから」と御米が催促した。宗助は、 「うん、思い切って行って来よう」と答えた。小六は坂井の好意で、そこの書生に住み込んだ。その上に宗助と安之助が、不足のところを分担する事ができたらと小六に云って聞かしたのは、宗助自身であった。小六は兄の運動を待たずに、すぐ安之助に直談判をした。そうして、形式的に宗助の方から依頼すればすぐ安之助が引き受けるまでに自分で埒を明けたのである。 　小康はかくして事を好まない夫婦の上に落ちた。ある日曜の午宗助は久しぶりに、四日目の垢を流すため横町の洗場に行ったら、五十ばかりの頭を剃った男と、三十代の商人らしい男が、ようやく春らしくなったと云って、時候の挨拶を取り換わしていた。若い方が、今朝始めて鶯の鳴声を聞いたと話すと、坊さんの方が、私は二三日前にも一度聞いた事があると答えていた。 「まだ鳴きはじめだから下手だね」 「ええ、まだ充分に舌が回りません」 　宗助は家へ帰って御米にこの鶯の問答を繰り返して聞かせた。御米は障子の硝子に映る麗かな日影をすかして見て、 「本当にありがたいわね。ようやくの事春になって」と云って、晴れ晴れしい眉を張った。宗助は縁に出て長く延びた爪を剪りながら、 「うん、しかしまたじき冬になるよ」と答えて、下を向いたまま鋏を動かしていた。
