002: Elina Villemure

The Adaptive Athlete Podcast

In this episode of The Adaptive Athlete, host Mat Hotho sits down with adaptive athlete and CrossFit Level 1 coach, Elina Villemure, who was born missing both legs—one above the knee and one below the knee. Elina shares how she discovered CrossFit almost by accident in high school. Initially trying to “mimic” standard movements, she soon realized the importance of adapting movements to her body’s abilities rather than scaling them down.

Elina dives into her passion for helping others through her Adaptive Athlete Experience seminar, a 90-minute hands-on workshop that shows coaches and gyms how to integrate people with diverse needs—covering seated, lower-extremity, upper-extremity, and visual adaptations. She highlights the distinction between true adaptation and simply scaling.

Elina talks about her personal training challenges, favorite movements (like handstand walks!), and connections she’s made in the community—especially with fellow adaptive athlete Amy Bream. She offers practical tips and heartfelt advice, including what she’d tell her younger self: “Stop worrying about what others think.” Throughout the conversation, you’ll hear why Elina believes real inclusivity starts with awareness, creativity, and a willingness to meet every athlete right where they are.
