Hi, Fellow Dads, If you had just a few minutes to speak on national television, what would you say? What if you had only five words? 046 | Engrave the Gospel into Their Hearts

Hi, Fellow Dads, A few weeks ago, something special happened in Washington, D.C.—and it’s probably not what you’re thinking! A new statue was unveiled in the Capitol, engraved with a most unusual title: Preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If someone were to make a statue of you, Dad, could they put the same title on it? Should they be able to? What is the gospel, anyway—and what books can help us and our families ground our lives in it? Nathan Seven Words Concerning the Gospel (with Scripture references) The Gospel has a Source—and that Source is God. Rom.1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, The Gospel is found in the Scriptures—foretold in the OT and fulfilled in the NT. Rom.1:2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) The Gospel has a Subject—and that is God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Rom.1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; The Gospel has a specific Substance—and that is the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Rom.1:4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: Rom.5:6 ¶ For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Rom.5:8-10 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. Rom.10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 1 Cor.15:3-4 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: The Gospel brings Salvation—to those who believe it. Rom.1:16 ¶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. The Gospel is the Standard—it’s the standard for how God will judge individual sinners in the day of judgment—those who refused to believe the gospel (or believed another gospel), will be condemned to eternity in the lake of fire. Rom.2:12, 16 12 ¶ For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. The Gospel is our Stewardship—God has placed it in our hands to be used properly. Rom.1:16a For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: Rom.2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. Rom.16:25 ¶ Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, Quotes “When a sinner believes the gospel of Christ, God does the saving!”—NC Books—instruction in the gospel (written for children) The Lamb, by John Cross, published by GoodSeed International (written for children) The Big Picture Story Bible, by David Helm (Illustrated Bible story book with a salvation message) The Prisoners, the Earthquake and the Midnight Song, by Trillia Newbell (appropriate for teens through adults) One Second After You…, by Mark Cahill (written for adults but appropriate for teens) Ultimate Questions, by John Blanchard, published by Evangelical Press Books—illustrations of the gospel in biographical format Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret, by Dr. and Mrs. Howard Taylor God of the Aurora, by Bruce Hami

    045 | Every Dad a…What?!—Guest, Darin Kelsey

Hi, Fellow Dads, Every Christian dad has been appointed by God to be the shepherd of his own home. Does that thought overwhelm you as it does me? But God hasn’t left us alone in this! He has given us wise counsellors to walk alongside and share the wisdom and experience He’s given them. Join us today to hear from one of those wise counsellors—our guest, Pastor Darin Kelsey—as he shares some tips that helped him lead his children to love the Lord, and of course some book recommendations as well! Learning to Look Up, Nathan Quotes “First and foremost is our own relationship with Christ. We have to be the real Christian.” “Sometimes we fail, and we have to acknowledge that before those we love. When we are concerned about matters that are hard to address, we still have to address those. We can’t just think it’s going to go away or vanish in some mystical way. Forgiveness has to be sought when necessary.” Thanksgivings have to be given. Recognition of people’s accomplishments. “It’s not just a matter that they do or respond or act in a certain way, or act in ways that please me, but that their heart is tuned to that also….It’s not just a matter of trying to compel someone to do right, as much as it is even in their heart and mind to think and concern themselves right.” Guide your children through loss to teach them what’s truly valuable—the preciousness of life. “We would require all of our children to go to another realm of the world. We would take them on missions trips so that they could see a God who is much greater than just our house or our church….From our perspective, that was a great growing up moment for our children.” “We would take time and actually have family devotions regularly….Saturdays were a unique gatherings for our family—we would sing….So I’ve often encouraged fathers to take those times and spend it in God’s word together, pray together, talk together.” “Some of the counsel I’ve even given for the pre-marital couples is…if you play together and pray together, sometimes you’ll stay together!....We would camp together,…we had the special times when we were away from electricity, surviving on the land, those were memorable times.” “One of the reasons we were tighter knit is that we homeschooled….and so the church became our social connection, versus the school, and so that was a great help, encouraging our children to relate with adults, and other people older than them, not just their age…” “Most of our education—even in our own lives—is learned as we live. And so if we can establish the way to learn or the means of information, much of the growing will be done during their living versus just those primary years.” “Nothing can replace the Scriptures….I can’t step away from that at all. That is by far the greatest resource I have besides God Himself.” “When we do have the encouragement from the practice of our family, it definitely stimulates that to continue….Some of this, you allow the grace of God to grow a life—not without influence, but so that they mature at the same time when they realize, ‘You know, I need to make these decisions.’ You’ll make the decision for them, many times, growing up, but eventually it has to be theirs.” “I as a dad, and you, gentlemen, as you live, are going to find that you don’t know everything, and you don’t understand all the aspects of God. And that’s okay. He knows Himself, and we can trust Him.” Books & Authors The Scriptures (The Holy Bible) We Two Alone: Attack and Rescue in the Congo, by Ruth Hege A survival manual Spurgeon’s sermons Walking With the Giants, by Warren Wiersbe Schaeffer’s Theology Charles Ryrie If you enjoyed this episode, 💡 See the show notes at https://refreshpublishing.com/045-every-dad-a-what 🎙️Please subscribe to the podcast so you can listen again next week! ✍🏻 Leaving a review is the best way to say "thanks"

043 | Lead Your Family to Joy

Hey Fellow Dads, Are the struggles of life and the decline of society getting you and your family down? About 2500 years ago, a group of men in similarly troubled circumstances once led their families to rejoice in God——and we can still learn from their example. Today’s episode discusses how they did it and what books we might use to help our families on our journey to joy. Nathan Show Notes Please excuse the grammatical error (I should have said “Would their wives and children have rejoiced . . . ”) I couldn’t correct it with the same voice now that my cold is getting better. 😁 I stated that I wouldn’t mention biography titles in the recording—but they (along with other book titles) are given below, so be sure to keep reading! Scriptures Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: [and] again I say, Rejoice. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Nehemiah 12:40-43 40 ¶ So stood the two companies of them that gave thanks in the house of God, and I, and the half of the rulers with me: 41 And the priests; Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Michaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with trumpets; 42 And Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan, and Malchijah, and Elam, and Ezer. And the singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their overseer. 43 ¶ Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off. Principles to Lead Your Family to Joy (based on Nehemiah 12:40-43) The men formed an environment of praising God. The men praised God at great personal expense. They set the example of praising God.
