Massive decisions like selling the family home, packing up the kids, and embarking on a beautiful family adventure—to live, travel, and explore a different continent, don’t happen over night. Heck, they don’t even happen in a matter of weeks or months either.
For my guest today, a Live Immediately Podcast alumni, Ben McAlary, his vision, wishes, dreams and idea of this family adventure has been a topic of conversation with his wife Brooke, for over five years, and I am beyond happy for the McAlary family that they are literally days away from boarding the plane.
I loved this chat with Ben as we discuss some deep topics about preparing for a trip with so many unknowns. Cutting the logistical and emotional ties by selling the family home instead of renting it out, bringing your children into the decision process, the hard work involved to make things happen, and the joy and anticipation of discovering a new daily rhythm.
Ben talks about how his motto at the beginning of 2017 was “to take more risks”, how he was generally risk-averse, but once he started taking risks he felt the intoxication of them and learnt to embrace being risky—and this family adventure, with no end date, is one of the biggest risks he has ever taken.
Ben isn’t calling it a trip or an adventure. He calls it an experiment. That it’s not about getting things right all the time—but trying and seeing what happens and unfolds.
A beautiful way to truly live life, and one that I am sure will shape his kids.
I hope you enjoy x
